5.0 out of 5 stars Lennon's masterpiece!
This is a product of a true genius! Not only do we have the song of the millenium ('Imagine') by the artist of the millenium but also an excellent assortment of acoustic and rock tracks. 'It's so hard', 'I don't want to be a soldier', 'Gimme some truth' and 'How do you sleep?' show Lennon's true characteristic grit with biting fuzzy guitar and equally fitting vocals...

2.0 out of 5 stars Try to imagine John Lennon with no possessions...
A truly over-rated album, compiled by one of the greatest hypocrites of the 1960s. Try as I might, I cannot imagine John Lennon without possessions. His estate was estimated at $500 million when he died...Why didn't you show us the way, John, by divesting yourself and giving away your vast fortune? The rest of the songs are forgettable, and mediocre. Take a pass...

5.0 out of 5 stars Lennon's masterpiece!, January 19, 2000

This is a product of a true genius! Not only do we have the song of the millenium ('Imagine') by the artist of the millenium but also an excellent assortment of acoustic and rock tracks. 'It's so hard', 'I don't want to be a soldier', 'Gimme some truth' and 'How do you sleep?' show Lennon's true characteristic grit with biting fuzzy guitar and equally fitting vocals. Emotional acoustic ballads like 'How?' and 'Oh my love' go nicely with the more jolly 'Jealous guy' and the folksy 'Crippled inside' and 'Oh Yoko!'. A great performance by John, Phil Spector and the Plastic Ono's and also by George Harrison who plays brillient slide guitar. Overall, an enlightening and cheerful album which follows nicely from the outstanding melancholy album 'Lennon/Plastic Ono band'. Nobody will ever rival John's lyrical abilities and certainly won't capture John's mood in quite the same way again. We miss you John.

5.0 out of 5 stars His second , and last, solo masterpiece., December 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
This brilliant work, is unlike his prior solo release the classic Plastic Ono Band, in that Phil Spector's production sensibilities actually come through on this one. The musicianship is outstanding (check out George Harrison's guitar work on Give Me Some Truth). Lennon is in fine form as a vocalist, musician and songwriter. Standouts include the title cut, Jealous Guy, How Do You Sleep and Give Me Some Truth. There really is not a weak number in the bunch. A must buy, as this is truly one of rock's masterworks...Simon

5.0 out of 5 stars The most powerful song I've ever heard., September 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
Simply put, Imagine is an unbelivable tune with lyrics so well thought out that the instint I heard the sample, I knew I had found a tune that would be by far better than any thing I think I'll ever hear again.

5.0 out of 5 stars everything has an edge, April 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
This album helped me survive adolescence. There is humor here (the lyric to "Crippled Inside", the harmonica in "Oh, Yoko"), but everything has an edge. The hard-rock string arrangements in "It's So Hard" and "How Do You Sleep" are brilliant and original. George Harrison is in eloquent form in "Gimme Some Truth" and "How Do You Sleep".

I also recommend PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another artist dying too early, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
It is extremely hard to imagine what kind of music would have been put out by some of the rock pioneers who had died tragically. What would Jimi Hendrix be playing guitar like by now? How would Janis be singing by now? What kind of songs would John Lennon be writing by no? We are talking genius stuff here. This i think is the finest of Lennon's solo albums and is a must have for anyone's collection, whether you are a fan or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love these songs, August 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
John Lennon was truly one of the greatest artists of all time. I loved these songs when they first came out and I still love them, especially "Imagine" and "Jealous Guy". It's sad that such a promising artist died so young, as he had so much more to give the world

5.0 out of 5 stars Why I like the Imagine CD by John lennon., July 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
The Imagine CD was a very well-written collection of music, at least in my opinion. It did have a little of the Beatle beat, and that might have given it a little-less effect than songs like "God" or "Working Class Hero", but it did have pretty good emotional songs like "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" that represent the pain and feeling of not wanting to go die in Vietnam. And of course there's the old standby of "Imagine", a very sweet song full of emotion, that Paul McCartney could never had written. Not made for pop music at all, this is just one of John Lennon's musical masterpieces. I also enjoyed the Imagine Soundtrack, in case anyone's interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars SHOOT THE GUY WHO SHOT LENNON, July 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
John Lennon is a genius no doubt of that. This album proves it. IMAGINE (THE SONG) has a great sound to it but so do the rock songs like GIVE ME SOME TRUTH, I DON'T WANT TO BE A SOLDIER, and others. If only John was alive now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic follow up to POB, August 23, 1998
This review is from: Imagine (Audio CD)
Plastic Ono Band was a deadend. A great album, but still a dead end. It's been said that IMAGINE was a retreat. Actually, it was a progression. Lennon found a way to combine the raw emotionalism of POB with his sentiment; his anger with his tenderness.

"Jealous Guy"(originally a contender for the white album under the title "Child of Nature" is one of the most sublime melodies Lennon has ever written and every bit as emotionally honest and naked as any song on POB. Lennon later dismissed IMAGINE as POB with sugar coating. It's much more than that--it is the vision of a man looking forward to the future and less on the pain of the past.

MIND GAMES and WALLS AND BRIDGES would reconfigure and rework much of this album(and, in the process, reducing its critical status)in less compelling ways. Although both those albums have their moments(particularly the MIND GAMES album), it is clear that after IMAGINE Lennon was treading water until the next big development appeared in the form of DOUBLE FANTASY.

Other reviewers have missed the maturity of the album and the emotional complexity of this work. POB was Lennon's missed adolescence. IMAGINE is the work of an adult--a contradicition in rock music at the time--and all the better for it.
