Book Description

Jake wanted to take Hollywood by storm...
...but he soon discovers that swimming with the sharks is a dangerous pastime.

Actor turned struggling film producer Jake Borden never misses an opportunity - for money or sex.

Devious, dishonest and unprincipled, Jake relies on good looks and a glib tongue to eek out a living. Thing is, he's behind on rent, his Jag is about to be repo'd, and he owes his assistant more back pay than he can calculate. With his dreams of wealth and fame fading, Jake needs to find a way to the top. Fast.

When he meets a wealthy middle-aged woman whose daughter is dying, Jake immediately see his opportunity: the troubled girl is the perfect star for a biopic on Lainie Dalton, a famous singer who also starved herself to death. And the mother, with her ample coffers, is the perfect person to fund the project.

Jake's pitch to her anxious mother is simple: not only will the girl become a star, but the acting gig might renew her desire to live. Doubtful but grasping at straws, the desperate mother starts writing checks, and, to his own surprise, Jake finds the scheme working.

But success turns out to be costly, and Jake soon finds that wealth and fame might not be what he actually wanted...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gift of the gab August 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
No-dough "more talk than reality" Hollywood movie producer Jake Borden is Chuck Alverson's latest creation. And a welcome one he is. It's always a treat to find a book that manages just the right mix of snappy dialogue, enough but not too much sex, no violence, an important current concern and a happy but not sappy ending.

Alverson's breezy and irreverent style brings Jake to life as he sets out to feature a still alive - though barely - anorexia sufferer in a biopic about Lainie Dalton (aka Karen Carpenter). Alverson imparts his gift of the gab to Jake - no need for long paragraphs to set the scene - and the action moves along at a clip.

The result is a very readable book - perfect for the plane or any other time when you need a light but enjoyable diversion. Keep `em coming, Alverson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just imagine... May 15, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Sometimes, you just want to read something that is well- written, entertaining, and not earth- shattering. This was that book. The writing was fairly crisp with few errors and the plot was just twisted enough to keep me engrossed. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny June 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just the right amount of wisecracks with a bit of sex here and there. It also gives hope to those with family who are suffering from anorexia. My only gripe is the fact that in several places there was a Mr. Ripley when there should have been a Mrs. Ripley. This cut into the flow of the book because the first time I had to go back to see if I missed something and then the next several times it was just an irritation...something the author should edit for future purchasers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imagine Me May 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Intriguing tale exposing the underbelly of fame and fortune. An underfunded and morally bankrupt wannabe producer gets his dream break. Professionally his wishes come true. Emotionally he is left holding an empty bag of promises.
