Book Description

March 21, 1995
Imagine Yourself Well: Better Health through Self-Hypnosis is a remarkable view of hypnotherapy as a scientifically recognized treatment art. Based upon their extensive practice and clinical research in therapeutic hypnotic techniques, the authors have constructed an effective handbook articulating the therapeutic use of hypnosis by depicting word-for-word what transpires during a session. The fascinating series of carefully worded transcripts of hypnotic exercises will enable the reader to correct specific self-destructive habits (e.g., overeating and smoking), common psychological problems (insomnia and various phobias), chronic physical conditions (arthritis, back pain, high blood pressure, and migraine headaches), and performance anxieties (athletics and public speaking). The theory underlying clinical practice, including the key point that all hypnosis involves self-hypnosis, is explained in lay terms, and each exercise is grounded in sound cognitive, behavioral, or psychodynamic principles.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As a therapeutic method, hypnosis has been around since the eighteenth-century days of Mesmer's animal magnetism. It has always been controversial: some claim miraculous powers for it, and others decry it as charlatanism. Sean and Reid Kelly assert that hypnosis, which they liken to meditation, can be a powerful tool. They stress that their book is not a tutor for hypnotizing others but is instead intended to teach techniques useful for self-control while confronting various everyday situations. It covers an amazing range of events and circumstances during which self-hypnosis could be helpful: dealing with anxieties and phobias, preparing for a sporting event or a visit to the doctor, managing the pain and anguish of chemotherapy, and much more. In addressing each situation, the Kellys detail procedures expressly designed for it that seem quite simple: usually a set of images and directed courses of thought that they suggest as starting points rather than set ritual. Will they work? Anyone interested in hypnotherapy will want to read and see. Dennis Winters
