Book Description

International Folk Tale Series March 1998
For centuries, the voices of ordinary folk in China were muted by the dominant Confucian culture and remained largely hidden from outsiders. It is only now, through the study of Chinese folktales, that the quilt covering those lives and traditions is being lifted, corner by corner, and the voices of ordinary people-especially those of women-are beginning to emerge.

The 37 stories which comprise this collection challenge the long-held stereotypes and provide a rare look at the everyday lives of common people in villages across Fujian province. Despite the efforts and influence of the male-dominant Confucian culture, the stories reflect women's voices and women's lives touched by power and independence. Most of the women depicted here are strong, fearless, determined, intelligent, sometimes educated, and resourceful. They are talented and skilled. Some lead and organize.

Combining elements of the supernatural with that of reality, these authentic and beautifully written tales serve as examples of how folk culture not only co-existed with the dominant Confucian culture, but also engaged in passive resistance against the dominant values.

4.0 out of 5 stars from arch-villains to savior goddesses, March 22, 2010
By
This review is from: Imagining Women: Fujian Folk Tales (International Folk Tale Series) (Paperback)
Gernant is surprised by the range and depth of female characters in this collection of old folk stories. Some of the characters display Confucian-style moral force; some are tragic figures, and many are heroic protagonists of extraordinary abilities. The stories are translated roughly as found, so the action sometimes seems confusing to a Western eye. But overall, these tales illustrate a culture heavily shaped and inspired by strong women, who play any role from arch-villain to savior goddess.
