from arch-villains to savior goddesses,
By Brian Griffith (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Imagining Women: Fujian Folk Tales (International Folk Tale Series) (Paperback)
Gernant is surprised by the range and depth of female characters in this collection of old folk stories. Some of the characters display Confucian-style moral force; some are tragic figures, and many are heroic protagonists of extraordinary abilities. The stories are translated roughly as found, so the action sometimes seems confusing to a Western eye. But overall, these tales illustrate a culture heavily shaped and inspired by strong women, who play any role from arch-villain to savior goddess.
