5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
There isn't much to say about this little device other than the fact that it works exactly as it's supposed to. First of all, for anyone not sold on the technology, let me assure you that this key-sized tool is absolutely invaluable. Before I purchased the Imation Corp Flash USB Drive 512 MB (17054), I read all of the reviews which were mostly positive. When I received it I was very happy with its features. Since it is on a lanyard I wore it around my neck. One day I went to plug it in and I noticed that the non-detachable cap (the main resaon that I purchased it) had a small chip out of the corner...

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, September 26, 2004
This review is from: Imation Corp FLASH USB DRIVE 512 MB ( 17054 ) (Personal Computers)
There isn't much to say about this little device other than the fact that it works exactly as it's supposed to. First of all, for anyone not sold on the technology, let me assure you that this key-sized tool is absolutely invaluable. I've been using this for only a couple of months, but already I don't know how I ever got along without it. Instead of having to continuously burn CDs to bring files back and forth from work or having to carry around stacks of floppies so that I always have the most recent copy of my homework with me, I simply put everything onto this little gadget. I get 512 Megabytes in something that weighs about an ounce.

From a geek standpoint, this thing really performs. I've successfully had it working on a Windows XP system, Windows 2000 Professional, RedHat AS 2.1, Mac OS X, and the SuSE 9.1 Linux laptop that I'm typing this review on. The only Operating System I've had trouble with was SuSE 9.0, but my understanding is that the problem was with the OS rather than this equipment (apparently the version of the Linux kernel they were using had more than a few hardware issues).

I really like the physical design of this. It's tiny, but it's not at all delicate. It's extremely durable which is a boon for us clumsy members of the population. I've been (accidentally) thumping the tiny thing around quite a bit with absolutely no ill-effects. I also appreciate that the cap and the main portion are all part of the same unit. I've seen other thumb drives where the cap actually removes completely when you want to plug in. I'm certain this has led to literally thousands of users who have quickly misplaced their cap. Again, as I appreciated the anti-clumsiness factor, I also appreciate the attention paid to those of us who would loose the little bits and pieces if they aren't physically attached.

In short, I'd be lost without this lifesaver. Its capacity is definitely large enough for anything I use. It's fast, it's light and it's strong. I couldn't ask for anything better. It's small and convenient enough that I can simply wear it around my neck (using the provided cloth necklace) and not have to think about it until it's needed. And I know that when I do have to think about it, it'll just work. I'd go into withdrawal if I had to give up this thing.

This Flash Drive is the deluxe version of many other flash drives I have by different manufacturers. This one is elegant in design, very small (I was surprised by how small it is), and having the flip open end is great since there is no cap to lose. It is also very fast even on a USB 1.0 port. Highly recommended.

It works like a dream. No waiting, no fuss, and no looking for that darn cap when I'm finished. I wholeheartedly recommend this product.

I had some USB drives with caps, and inevitably lost them. I've had this drive for about 2 years now, and I've never lost anything or had any problem with it at all. I keep in on a lanyard in my backpack, so it goes everywhere with me, and it's always worked perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent USB flash drive, February 15, 2010

I love the Imation Swivel drives. I bought this 512 MB one in 2006 and got an 8 GB one 10 months ago. Also, there's no cap you have to worry about losing, which is great. I've never had any problems with either Imation Swivel drive.

I should add that 512 MB drives are so small by today's standards that there's no way they're worth more than $10. Even $10 would be overpriced.

This is a very good device, very fast, slim and so on. Unfortunately it's being left behind by better technologies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sub-Standard Materials, June 28, 2006

Before I purchased the Imation Corp Flash USB Drive 512 MB (17054), I read all of the reviews which were mostly positive. When I received it I was very happy with its features. Since it is on a lanyard I wore it around my neck. One day I went to plug it in and I noticed that the non-detachable cap (the main resaon that I purchased it) had a small chip out of the corner. After closer examination, I realized that the cap which appears to be metal is actually a very thin plastic. As a few more days elapsed, more little chips off of the cap. After about the fifth day of wearing it around my neck, I was walking down the sidewalk when I accidentally kicked something. It was my nearly new flash drive. So now I am shopping for a new one. Very disappointing!
