Antibiotics usually comprise the single largest component of the hospital pharmacy budget. As a result, new antibiotics with increased efficacy and alternative methods of administration are now the focus of attention in the effort to optimize treatment. This volume features clinical investigations of the performance of a new antibiotic combination of imipenem and cilastatin (a renal enzyme inhibitor) in the treatment of various infections. The advantages of intramuscular versus intravenous administration are discussed and an examination of the possibilities for administration of the formulation on an outpatient basis is provided.
