Mary Said: "Do Whatever He (Jesus) Tells You",
By Michael G. Batcho (McAdoo, PA (USA)) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Imitation of Mary (Hardcover)
Thomas A Kempis -- a name most people with spiritual interests are familiar with, authored the spiritual classic "The Imitation Of Christ" (sometimes titled "The Following Of Christ") . . . but A Kempis wrote more than just that notable volume. Romolo Sbrocchi took notice of his many writings on Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and saw the need to compile these scattered writings of A Kempis into one single volume for easy and convenient access for spiritual study and prayer.
He patterend the format of this volume to mirror the already world recognized "The Imitation of Christ". And because Mary shows us the way to Jesus, he similarly gave this book the title "The Imitation Of Mary" -- and it is in fact a sort of mirror image . . . Mary does reflect Jesus Christ and shines that image upon any and all who come to know her. And this little book serves to help make her present and known to any and all who read A Kempos's words and thoughts which are all scripturally founded and based reflections themselves. (Note: there is also another book which has the same title "The Imitation Of Mary" written by Alexander De Rouville in 1768 to provide a sort of sequel to "The Imitation Of Christ", and which is also an excellent book of Marian Spirituality leading the reader to Jesus. However Rouville patterned his writing upon Thomas A Kempis but are not the words of A Kempis.) If anyone wants to learn from and pray with Mary the Mother of Jesus, "The Imitation Of Mary" is a most appropriate and helpful book to have always at hand. If one wonders "why" Catholics and Orthodox and other Christians seek devotion to Mary as a companion to walk their pilgrimage with and to Jesus, "The Imitation Of Mary" will absolutely give light to their wondering. (and I can apply this to both the Thomas A Kempis book as well as to the other by Alexander De Rouville - each uniquely helpful and complimentary with one another.) "The Imitation Of Mary" will point and direct you to Jesus by presenting Mary, His mother . . . but even more, it will enlighten you about- YOU! :)
