Editorial Reviews

More people immigrate to the U.S. than any other country. Is it because they love hot dogs or want to meet Snoop Dogg? Maybe. But most want to chase the American dream! Immigrants is the story of roommates Vladislav (Russian) and Joska (Hungarian) as they get into all kinds of troubles, wild adventures and comical situations while adapting to life in America. With neighbors Flaco, a friend from Mexico; Mr. Chea, a Chinese restaurant owner; Nazim, a former Pakistani scientist turned tour bus driver; and Mr. Splits, an old black pimp, Vladislav and Joska's antics are hilarious, yet poignant for anyone who's ever had a dream.

Of a good technical visual quality, this DVD presents a hilarious story of setting in California, the USA, where for murky reason residing (to follow a daughter on a student visa, or?) Vlad of Russia, speaking near-perfect English, miraculously befriended Joska from Hungarian origin and tries to meet elementary ties while enjoying relaxed existence in immigrant environment of Los Angeles.

A comedy lacking of any sense and ending presents clichés of different ethnic groups mixing into a multicultural pot the USA are.

Easy viewing if too superficial recollecting of realistic problems exist.

If you like animation, Simpsons, family guy, etc. This will be up your alley. On the other hand there aren't special features, previews, extra flair. The animation and voiceover work is also not all that technically sound. I'm not sure I totally buy the voice with the images. Get past these minor flaws and enjoy a slightly stereotypically animated comedy.

That's Jóska explaining to another Hungarian that not all Russians (such as his friend, Vladislav) are bad. For his troubles, he is fired.

Immigrants: La Dolce Vita was first released in 2008, yet there's only 3 reviews of it as I post. This fact coupled with its way low price of $3 for a sealed copy should indicate to you that either [1] it remains obscure because it was very poorly marketed and distributed, or [2] it isn't good. Perhaps both are true, but unfortunately the latter is probably the real reason you haven't heard of it.

"From the animators of The Simpsons," brags the front cover. Immigrants: La Dolce Vita may be an instance of some animators pushing for a side project spilling out of their id (Freud's psyche), a project with content that simply wouldn't be acceptable on The Simpsons. I bought it in part due to the current xenophobic trends we are seeing in the United States, wondering optimistically if in some way those types of fears are addressed in a humorously insightful way. No such luck.

Obviously some will find this to be a barrel of laughs, as the previous reviewers seemed to. I found myself chuckling no more than a few times per hour, which is an extremely negative laugh per minute ratio. The humor is fairly juvenile and crude, although certainly not as vulgar as it could have been. If you randomly watched only a few minutes, it would be all too easy to draw conclusions about shallow racism; however, the writers were poking fun at people of all colors and ethnicities, so nobody was spared. As a Euro-mutt, I of course have no idea how I would feel about the stereotypes within the story if I were for example a Chinese American. It would be interesting to hear the opinions of actual immigrants after a screening.
