Very Raw. Although similar to later Beth Hart, the songwriting isn't as complex, nor do the songs jump at You and make You remember them. With the exception of "Blame the Moon" this effort is good, but obviously a freshman effort.
Still a must have for BH fans.

You like contemporary rockmusic? You like the dirty blues? You like ballads that take your breath away? Then you should read this. It has been pure destiny that gave this CD to me. I sat in a little cafe in hamburg with my girlfriend when there was this song in the background: Burn Chile from Beth Hart's debut Immortal. It has been the copy of the waitress - she was a exchange student from L.A. and this CD wasn't released in germany at all. Anyway I called a friend in the states to send me a copy and this has been the best decision ever. First I considered her music to be too overloaded by instrumentation, but that opinion changed after I heard it about 30 times. There are so many details in these songs - you have to take some time to take notice. This is music for advanced listeners. Then I had the chance to listen to this CD in a large music hall alone without anyone around. Wow - you need the right venue and the right volume and you will see what music is about. Today I'm absolutely sure - this is the best album of the whole century - even a little better than her latest release - Screaming for my supper. You just have to listen to it. It's getting better every time you do it, even after several hundred times. I recommend to buy not only this CD - buy a second CD player too, or the rest of your collection hasn't got a home anymore. This board has not enough stars to rate this CD right.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Voice of a Beautiful, Angry Angel. . . Stunning!, June 16, 2000

This review is from: Immortal (Audio CD)
There are no proper adjectives in the English language to accurately describe the pure force of nature that is Beth Hart's voice. If you only know her from "L.A. Song" baby, you don't know nuthin' yet! Love and loss, pain and regret, sex, sin, desire, and dreams. . . the stuff all rock songs are about, but it's the VOICE that brings it all alive. It's Beth Hart's voice that will brand your soul with the white-hot purity of her emotions. In one breath she's a peaceful child, in the next she's a raging angel. From the first rollicking track "Run," to the tender longing of "Hold Me Through the Night" and the dirty intensity of "Burn Chile," to the nostalgic sweetness of "Summer's Gone," through the righteous blues of "Am I the One," and the simple sadness of "Blame the Moon," there is NOT one miss and it NEVER gets old. If you like rock, you will like this. If you like blues, you will like this. If you like cds that are true ALBUMS of music--vocally, thematically, lyrically, et al, you will like this. "Immortal" is a CD you MUST have. . . or regret it for the rest of your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars This will be a classic., October 6, 1999

I first saw Beth Hart live before they had recorded and was hooked. When I found this CD I eagerly ordered it (from CD Universe) and impatiently awaited its arrival.

Ohh was it worth the wait! The opening 4 bars of Run (The first song on the CD) draw you in, and you won't want to leave as the songs fly by. Hold Me Through The Night, Immortal, Am I The One, Blame the Moon, Summer Is Gone, God Bless You, oooh! I get chills just typing the titles.

I have now bought 7 copies of this CD because everytime someone hears it in my house they are so in love with it that I have to give it away. I now keep a spare around so I can give it away and not go through withdrawals.

Oh, and if you _ever_ get a chance to see Beth Hart live, DO IT! Do it NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!, June 16, 2000

Having recently discovering Beth Hart and the tornado that she can unleash, I was quite happy to find this hard to find CD. As usual, Beth does not disappoint. On this, her first recording, Beth Hart sounds like a seasoned veteran who's been on the scene for some time. The songs range from straight-on rock & Blues to simple ballads, all with Beth's incredible voice soaring over the top like a conflagration.

I had this CD in my car when some friends rode with me and all they could say was "WHO IS THIS! ". They were quite impressed with her pipes and her soul. I only recommend CDs that I think deserve to be heard, and I put this one at the top of the list. I can only look forward to whatever she does in the future, and also that I won't have to wait too long like I have for the next Joan Osborne CD to hear more of this powerful force to be reckoned with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why don't more people know about Beth Hart?, July 10, 2005

This CD is spectacular. I bought it weeks after it came out and have never stopped listening to it. The music is good, soulful rock with one hellacious pure blues song that will knock you flat. The focus of the music is obviously Hart's voice and lyrics. The words are intense, honest, and heartfelt and she sings them all like it's for the last time. The killer song for me is Am I the One. I bought the CD after hearing this song on the radio. I almost drove off the road, wondering 'who is this!' Am I the One is sexy and sensuous and never fails to leave me breathless.

I have heard Beth Hart on the radio only once which I don't understand. No one I have ever talked to has heard of her which I don't understand. With all the talentless people recording CDs on a daily basis, how Beth Hart is not huge is inexplicable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Promising Newcomer of the 90's, July 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Immortal (Audio CD)
I heard Springsteen and the E-Street Band at the Agora in Cleveland when the band was relatively unknown. I left the hall knowing that the memory of that concert was one I would hold on to for the rest of my life. Music...energy...transformed...

I heard the Beth Hart Band live before buying their first CD (which I purchased the following day). This attractive, diminutive woman walks on stage and, after only the first couple of notes, the intensity and edge of a voice built to sing like only one before her (you got it...Janis) just shreds the air. I left the show with the pleasant exhaustion...and a sense that, if I couldn't marry this incredibly sensual, talented singer, I'd buy every CD she ever produced. Simply stunning...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ten Out Of Five- I'm Not Kidding!!!, June 25, 2006
This review is from: Immortal (Audio CD)
I purchased this cd at the same time as her Live At Paradiso, and love both. If I was to be given a gifted singing voice, man, oh man, I would pick a voice like Beth's. Though this is one of her earlier cds, it stands up there with the others -it's as great as them.Well crafted songs, all of them.'Summer Is Gone' and "Am I The One' are just two examples on the cd.As I have written in other reviews I have done for other BH cds, it utterly staggers me that Beth Hart is so overlooked as a musician in her own country. Here is a gifted song writer, musician and voice rolled into a person who is a survivor of life...And did I mention her amazing voice?Believe me, her voice can reduce you to tears, lots of them.Try any of Beth Hart's cds and learn what real music is.
