So I stumbled upon this on Amazon the other night. The premise sounded interesting, so I started with the sample. And then I bought the book....I have to say "wow", and I'm terribly surprised this book doesn't have more reviews.

Where to start? The main female character is Anaea. As you learn in the beginning, she has advanced breast cancer, and after quite a struggle, has learned she's going to die. I'll be honest; I was not happy with premise at the start. As a survivor myself, I often find that authors (both for books and movies) use cancer as some gateway to make something they desire to happen happen. It's often a cheap tool that is quickly abandoned, and to be honest, I expected no less. And I was shockingly and wonderfully surprised. Anaea's cancer and fight with cancer becomes a very important part of her character--as anybody who has gone through the experience can tell you, it really does shape who you are. The topic is never forgotten, and it really builds her character, coming up again and again. Not to be a spoiler, we get to see her from Hunter's point of view and see how much of a warrior she truly is, how beautiful and amazing she is having lived through the fight. From her own point of view, she is very much broken, missing her right breast, bald and dying, her worth further demeaned by her ex-husband. You really get to see her grow into herself, and it is beautiful. Thumbs up to the author--I didn't think using cancer to enhance a story could be done, but you did it very well.

And then there's Hunter. Aww Hunter...I am so very much in love. His growth is much more subtle and downplayed--of course, he's been alive for a few thousand years, and is pretty damn confident of himself--who wouldn't be set in their ways after a thousand years?

Paranormal romance is hot, but some of us just aren't turned on by vampires and werewolves. I picked this one up for something different and wasn't disappointed.

[SPOILER ALERT] The book opens with Anaea Solis, dying of cancer, standing on the Queen Street Bridge in Pittsburgh, about to throw herself into the half-frozen Allegheny River. It's either that or die slowly as the cancer eats her alive. But before she can convince herself to let go, a good and good-looking Samaritan approaches her from behind and tries to convince her to live. He's a stranger and doesn't understand her circumstances, of course, so she's cynical no matter how sexy his voice. Then a sword drives through both of them, they tumble into the icy river together, and the good Samaritan's body is so savagely injured that even the dragon-spirit inhabiting it can't magically heal the sword thrust. The spirit, Hunter, transfers into Anaea's dying body, giving him every reason to keep her alive. And the way his life is going, that's not going to be easy. [END SPOILER ALERT]

The plotline is nonstop and solid, classic action-reaction. Anaea is adaptable but realistic, and Hunter is ferocious, as a dragon should be. The chemistry between the two is fabulous and funny; try taking a shower with a male dragon looking out through your eyes, watching and feeling your every move. The little bits of dragonish behavior scattered throughout, such as showing a bit of teeth for sexual aggression, are logical yet clever.

The magic also shows logic and thankfully isn't overplayed, leaving the bulk of the work to the physical realm for the characters to handle. Clearly a lot of thought went into building this fantasy world, in some places perhaps too much, but it's fed to the reader in mainly digestible morsels.

WOW!! What a fantastic hidden gem. I was cruising through selections on my kindle and noticed this first for the awesome cover and then second because its a dragon novel.(So hard to get good dragon shifter romance) CI Black writes a romance that is not to be missed. The story has a beginning that sucks you in with the hero Hunter attempting to talk the heroine Anaese down from jumping off a bridge in a suicide attempt. Hunter is a royal assasin for the dragon spirits. He is attempting to return from a mission when he is betrayed and attacked. Anaes is at the end of her rope. Her determination and will to survive are tremendous but the ongoing battle with her breast cancer now has her weary of the battle.

I found both characters to be so real. Anaes' cancer is in the background but not forgotten by any means as she struggles to figure out the court intrigue and paranormal world she now finds herself immersed in. Hunter is to die for. Such a sweet and strong Alpha who was willing to turn his back on his race to be with Anaes if choices came down to that. The plot of the royal family being betrayed in an attempt to overthrow them was fantastic and very well written. Secondary characters played a key part and had enough of their own personality entwined with the story and main characters without overshadowing. Definitely interested in following this series.

Thanks to the first two reviewers who had me sucked in even more after reading the blurb and their reviews

I totally loved this book. When I read the synopsis of what this book was about, I thought it might be a good read so I got a sample of this book for my kindle. After reading the sample I just knew that I had to have this book. I absolutely loved the whole story, the only thing that I would consider a down side would be the fact that I really want to know what happened after Hunter and Anaea left Court to start their own lives. I totally recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal romances and is looking for something new to read. I also love the uniqueness of this story, dragons inhabiting the bodies of those who have died because the dragons have lost their own bodies and how humans have a latent connection to the earth and are able to gain magic if a dragon inhabits their body. Love love love this book.
