Fun Read,

This review is from: The Immortal Fire (Cronus Chronicles Trilogy) (Hardcover)
I happened across The Shadow Thieves several years ago and purchased it for my daughter. Both of us enjoyed the story while learning or relearning some Greek mythology. We have been waiting for the last two books for quite awhile. Finally they were released and neither were a disappointment. Even though my daughter is a junior in high school and reads age appropriate books, she likes a quick fun book for pure enjoyment. The Cronus Chronicles fits the bill.

I've read all three books of the Cronus Chronicles. I loved the first book. And this one is okay, but drags. It isn't as good as the first one. I kept reading because I had already bought all of them so felt like I had to. If it hadn't been my book I would have taken it back to the library.

Mythology Reimagined,

Recommended for ages 9 +.
As always, filled with humor, wonderfully delightful characters and one of the best friendship/ non-romantic relationships in ages, this book is one I would recommend to practically anyone. It blends Greek mythology into a modern world, pits two thirteen year-old protagonists against the entire Pantheon bent on humanity's destruction, and then throws in one of the most amusingly wicked villains ever and voila, you have the recipe for an excellent read.

A Fitting Conclusion For An Excellent Series,
This review is from: The Immortal Fire (Cronus Chronicles Trilogy) (Hardcover)
Unlike other lengthy concluding volumes to several recent series based on mythology (such as O. R. Mellig's disappointingly confused rehash of every Canadian myth in "The Book of Dreams" and Rick Riordan's superior but battle-logged "The Last Olympian"), "The Immortal Fire" achieves what every final volume should: it is by far the best in the series as well as convincingly and entertainingly bringing the story to a satisfying closure. Humor is evident, especially in the utterly crazed Philonecron's scenes, while Zee and Charlotte are as believable and loveable as ever with this volume focusing more on the quality of their partnership. Much more is revealed about the Prometheans, with a touch of X-Files tinged paranoia, and the delightful Sir Lawrence makes a cameo appearance. The portrayal of the Greek gods will delight all those who, on first reading the myths, wondered how such an irresponsible and morally challenged group could wield such power. Most of all, the final chapters are exciting, touching, and compelling. Ursu's writing has improved so markedly from the first volume that this is one of the best released recently; if you were waiting to see where the series would go before comitting, dive in. Like Charlotte and Zee's journey, this one is well worth the time.

Wilde Times at Hartnet High,
By Throckmorton (Minneapolis, Mn) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Immortal Fire (Cronus Chronicles Trilogy) (Hardcover)
It's rare when a satire is so light and seemingly effortless that it can be delightful as well as propel a plot. That's the gift that Anne Ursu has given us. She reminds me of a beneficent Oscar Wilde, lovingly and laughingly skewering her mythic targets as they interact with her human protagonists Charlotte and Zee. The appearances of the Greek gods are always brilliantly funny, and the author is in her "Zone" as she delightfully exposes their effete foppery. It's also a rare adventure book that makes its teen heros wrestle with questions of whether it's worth sacrificing one for the good of the many, and where other authors have foundered on such ponderous rocks, Anne Ursu's clever humor and plot smoothly navigates the reader through these tricky shoals to a satisfying port. It's hard to know if this is an adult book masquerading as a teen novel, or vice versa. My 15 year old son found it just as funny as I did, so perhaps it doesn't matter. Like J.K. Rowling's books, it satisfies both audiencies.

This review is from: The Immortal Fire (Cronus Chronicles Trilogy) (Hardcover)
I read the previous two books in this series and found this one quite the disappointment. It was an extremely slow-moving jumbled story with tons of repetition and WAY too much whining. The few moments of excitement were drenched in noncreative gore and vomit. My early teenage sons, both avid readers, were also not impressed.
