Russia's war in Chechnya is a puzzle to most westerners, an obscure but somehow notable conflict appearing periodically on the nightly news. This documentary, which features combat footage shot within Chechnya and interviews with Chechen fighters and civilians, does much to untangle this riddle. The first thing an outsider has to grasp is that any distinction between fighters and civilians is blurred, as the Chechens consider themselves warriors first, and farmers or oil-field workers second. This traditional warrior culture, with its roots grounded in centuries of conflict with Russian adversaries, is deeply entrenched. And it's intensified by the deep Islamic faith of the Chechens, which holds that falling while defending the homeland earns the warrior martyrdom. Much of the footage in this documentary is shot with handheld video gear in the field during actual combat operations, and what it might lack aesthetically is more than made up for with its immediacy and a distinctive atmospheric quality. The warriors profiled, including the Chechen hero Shamil Basayev, are unique characters, and hearing them speak and seeing evidence of some of their exploits provides invaluable insight into the conflict that has become a thorn in the side of modern Russia. --Robert J. McNamara

Product Description

Bloodied and demoralized, Russian units withdrew from Chechnya in September 1996-a year and a half after it bludgeoned its way into the Chechen capital of Grozny. But the war is far from over. In fact, Chechnya's continuing conflict with Russia is a story that spans centuries.

Award winning Immortal Fortress and its producer/director Dodge Billingsley take the viewer on a dangerous behind-the-scenes journey into Chechnya, exploring the tiny mountain republic's war driven culture while searching for its most popular modern warrior, Shamil Basayev.

After centuries of blood feuds, battle traditions, and resistance to all foreign occupiers, the warrior cult defines Chechen society. Every Chechen man is first a warrior, then a farmer, baker or oil worker. Shamil Basayev personifies this warrior spirit. To Russia and the west he is considered a terrorist, but in Chechnya a hero. His battlefield exploits have become legendary. The surprise attack on the Russian city Budyonnovsk in 1995 and the invasion of western Dagestan in 1999 have brought him international attention.

Immortal Fortress is a riveting look behind the scenes of one of the world's most controversial men, and answers the broader question of why Shamil Basayev and thousands of other Chechens fight.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rare and telling glimpse inside Chechen culture, December 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Immortal Fortress: A Look Inside Chechnya's Warrior Culture [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"Immortal Fortress" is a rare look into a culture completely closed from foreigners. In light of the current conflict exploding in Chechnya, this film is an important story of a culture, its struggles, and its attitudes towards war told from the people themselves. While viewers leave the film with an increased understanding and sympathy for the Chechen's desire for independence, as well as a sense of awe for their David-and-Goliath-type victory, Mr. Billingsley manages to maintain an objective balance. Though the only voices heard are those of the Chechens, it is their own brutality and hatred that condemns them-- speaking of the inhumanity of the Russians on one hand, then jovially describing their own brutal acts with pride. The danger faced by the filmmaker in entering Chechnya is a worthy story in itself, bested only by the journalistic importance of the story he came out with.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., January 6, 2001

I was hoping for two things when I bought this video...one, to be emotionally moved and two, to attain decent quality archival footage. I received neither. Although there is a lot of footage, the editing is a bit fast and chaotic with an addition of cheesy (and overdone) video effects to "heighten" the intensity. I found the film to be both patronizing and pretty pretentious. Its a pity...there's quite an opportunity for a real heartwrenching, "war is bad" theme but instead I saw something that felt like propaganda.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Chechen Tactic, No Tactic", January 25, 2004
This review is from: Immortal Fortress: A Look Inside Chechnya's Warrior Culture [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Great movie, I only say this because it's just about the only documentary I have ever seen on this war. Theres maybe all together 3 minutes of actual combat footage in this film. I was really impressed that this film maker did make it out of there with his head still attached to his body. Chechens are notorious for kidnapping.

I was dissapointed in the fact that they rarely discussed tactics, the only one I recall is about street fighting, and how the Chechens would find two Russian squads at both ends of a street and one of them would run through the middle and fire in both directions and the Russians would end up shooting at each other for 30 minutes...they only realized they were fighting there comrades when they called in for artillery fire. I thought that was amazing.
