5.0 out of 5 stars All Hail The Masters...., September 11, 2010
By
This review is from: Immortal: Live at Wacken 2007 (DVD/CD) (DVD)
This was the most excited as I have been all year. The first ever DVD release by Norwegian gods of black metal, Immortal.

Setlist: The setlist is too short in my honest opinion, but if it were upto me, I would want a 3 hour setlist with all their albums played in their entirety (a little too much I must admit ;). Anyway, there's 11 songs in total distributed over their entire catalogue, the only exception being Blizzard Beasts; Noctambulant or Mountains of Might would have been a real treat to listen to live.

Performance: What can I say. Abbath is in top form. Razor sharp riffing while still making the live performances sound very close to the studio recordings. Apollyon and Horgh have a tight rhythm section. The band plays a good combination of the newer mainstream stuff (Tyrants, SOND) and instantly revert back to their black-metal roots by diving into classics like Unholy Forces of Evil and The Sun No Longer Rises (opener). A little firebreathing by Abbath during Unholy forces of Evil just adds to the excitement of the show.

DVD: It's a bummer that they didn't release this concert in Blu-Ray (what a disappointment). However, the picture quality on the DVD is great. For those who haven't seen them live, this is a must buy. No bonus features on the DVD however, just the concert.

All in all, a definite pickup for all fans of metal, hard rock-- heck, if you appreciate great musicianship, you will appreciate this no matter what genre you are into.

Immortal are an awesome band and after watching this dvd and listening to the CD anyone who says otherwise is lying. Even if you don't like this band you cannot deny the amazing musicianship and showmenship displayed here. The sound quality is outstanding, the set list is great, the performance itself is flawless and the image quality is second to none. Amazing band, amazing package.

WOW ! This dvd is like being hit by a ten-ton sledgehammer !! First official release on dvd for this incredible norwegian Black Metal band (there's a Grasspop 2008 tvrip around but the quality sucks). These guys don't take their stage attitude as seriously as say, current Marduk; they have a more fun-oriented, rockstar stance but they sound like hell unleashed on the other hand.

This dvd has been mixed by none other than swedish guitar-god and producer Peter Tägtren of Hypocrisy and Pain fame; this guy even played second guitar on Marduk's ¨Germania¨ live album. The picture is so sharp it cuts, and the filming and editing impeccable. I counted 20 different camera angles ! No extras of any kind; the whole bitstream of the disc has been used for the widescreen pic and LPCM-only sound.

Everything is clear and audible but for the drums; a tad weakly mixed in at the beginning but as the show progresses they get better and better. The double kick-drums have a very low, sloppy tone as oppossed to a dryier, punchier one like I had expected but maybe they had them tuned that way but as I said before, this gets better throughout the show. I could have used louder snares and cymbals but Horgh rocks anyway.

Abbath's guitar shreds, period. Guitar tone is virtually homicidal. A second flanged guitar can be heard on some songs; not post-produced or DAT but a sample the guy records LIVE in a pedal at the beginning of the songs and later on triggers at will to create the effect.

Apollion's bass anchors the rhythm with aplomb without having to resort to a fifth string (dunno what tuning was he using, though). This guy is a pretty good rhythmic guitarrist as well as demonstrated on Gorgoroth's live dvd.

Man this dvd is worth every cent !! It was about time we could acquire a visual live document of this legenday combo. Extras like music videos and interviews would have rounded up an already neat package.

I have loved Immortal since their American Tour in support of Sons of Northern Darkness. This DVD is great. They are underrated in American Culture. Their music from the land of the Midnight sun inspires me regularly because it is true metal!! Thank you Immortal for being so darn talented with your Black Metal!
