IN rlslng to propose this toast I cannot ignore ¥hat Inust be in nlany of your n1inds, the recollection that last year it ,vas subnlitted by a very dear friend of my ovn, vvho, alas! has now gone to his rest, I mean Dr. Richa rd Ga rnett ,1 Nlan y of you who heard him in this place will recall, with kindly memories, that venerable scholar. I am one of those vvho, in the interval have stood 1 Richard Garnett (1835-(906) was son of the philologist of the same name who was for a time prieH-vicar uf Lichfield Cathedral. He attended the Johnson Celebration on Sept. IS, 1905, and proposed "the Immortal Memory of DT', Johnson." He died on the following Good Friday~ April 13, and was buried in Highglte Cemetery April 17, 1906. 3
