Book Description

June 29, 2010

Welcome to Wyldcliffe, the place that haunts my present, my past, and my future.

Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn from her home near the sea to become the newest scholarship student, strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave her drowning in loneliness.

Evie's only lifeline is Sebastian, a mysterious and attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie's feelings for Sebastian blaze with each secret meeting, she begins to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie she could be a sister. Evie is slowly drawn into a tangled web of past and present that she cannot control. As the extraordinary, elemental forces of Wyldcliffe rise up like the mighty sea, Evie is faced with an astounding truth about Sebastian, and her own incredible fate.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10–Sensible Evie Johnson arrives alone to face her new life at the Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies. Raised by her beloved grandmother, Evie never wanted to attend boarding school, especially one for spoiled rich girls. But Frankie has fallen gravely ill and Evie's father is away in military service, so off to Wyldcliffe she goes. It is as horrible as Evie suspected it would be. The girls mistreat her, the headmistress is a nightmare, and she keeps seeing a girl who looks just like her. Evie's only joy comes from her budding romance with elusive Sebastian, who tells her that he lives near the school. Why will he only meet her at night? What does he know about the mysteries surrounding the school? And who is that shadowy girl? Billed as the first in a paranormal romance series, this lightweight story is filled with romance, mystery, and suspense. The moors provide plenty of atmosphere and Wyldcliffe Abbey and its teachers are downright spooky.–Sharon Grover, Hedberg Public Library, Janesville, WI

About the Author

Gillian Shields is the author of Immortal, Betrayal, and Eternal, the first books about the sisterhood of the Mystic Way, as well as many other books for young readers. She spent her childhood roaming over the Yorkshire moors and dreaming of the Brontë sisters. After studying in Cambridge, London, and Paris, she became a teacher. She has taught in a girls' boarding school and also in a drama school where it was rumored that the ghost of a young girl could be heard crying in the night. Gillian was inspired to write this series in celebration of the power of first love, the strength of female friendship, and the haunting mystery of the past.

2.0 out of 5 stars Age Appropriate, for everyone under the age of 15 October 20, 2009
The two stars only reflect my personal opinion. I am a college student, I usually do not have a problem dabbing into the young adult genre because I still consider myself to be a young adult. However, throughout the entire book I was disinterested. I read it out of the hope that the small promising tidbits of prose would develop and bloom into something beautiful. Unfortunately, that just did not happen for me. In my opinion, it took a lot of what made several other young adult novels unique and borrowed all the ideas. I found it to be very reminiscent of many recently popular books. Furthermore, the characters did absolutely nothing for me. Before I become too brutally honest or petty, I will leave it at this: it just wasn't meant for me. Maybe, however, it just might be meant for younger teenagers who don't expect much from books other than a mercurial, cute guy and social problems in a paranormal school. Or, maybe not.

2.0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting more August 20, 2009
With her mother dead, father deployed overseas, and her grandmother ill, Evie Johnson has no choice but to attend Wyldcliffe Abbey, an all girls boarding school. Stripped of any electronics, the girls live a rigid and strictly controlled life under the mistresses at Wyldcliffe. Evie, unaccustomed to their practices and bullied by the cousin of the dead girl whose place she took, finds solace in a mysterious boy who meets her at night outside by the lake. But there's much more to Sebastian than meets the eye...

Immortal is a book that packs in a lot between its pages: strange old powers, a mysterious guy, journal entries from a girl who lived over 100 years ago, a menacing secret society, a strange disappearance, family your head spinning yet? However, Shields does a commendable job at connecting all of these elements in a complex storyline that is unique and's just a bit underdeveloped and hard to follow. Many things in Immortal are lacking or just fall flat; the romance between Evie and Sebastian isn't that interesting, and Evie goes back and forth between loving and hating him so many times, readers will lose track. The book moves slowly and is in danger of losing readers until about 200 pages in when a few new twists are thrown in. From then on out, everything is rushed to a very quick, vague showdown and then finished off with an odd, abrupt ending.

Immortal does have some redeeming qualities: the mistresses of Wyldcliffe are genuinely creepy and do scare the reader a bit, and Shields' plot is very unique. Immortal might have been a bit more enjoyable if there had just been more to it, if things had been developed a bit more, or perhaps a bit more focused. The ending is open, hinting at a sequel, but whether or not this reader will pick it up is still up in the air.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enticing August 10, 2009
By Jenny
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was an enticing story. The story is about a 16 year old girl Evie Johnson who is ripped from her life by the sea to attend an all school called Wyldcliffe. After Evie's grandmother who has helped raise her after Evie's mother dies has a heart attack and put in a nursing home, Evie's farther who is solider and and away on duty most of the time finds a way to get his daughter a scholarship into the elite Wyldcliffe Abbey School. A school made up of mostly rich stuck-up girls. At the school Evie finds herself getting in trouble a lot. She is also very lonely as she is hated by most of the other girls there. Until Sebastian comes into her life. She sneaks around at night to be with him, and finds herself falling in live with him her first love. But Sebastian has dark secrets that he us keeping for Evie. Secrets Sebastian feels will make Evie hate him if she knew. Secrets reveal themselves after Evie discovers her family heritage and her link to Wyldcliffe. But dangers awaits Evie as she discovers her true power. It is a beauifully written about the power of love. Shields ends the story with you wanting more. It ends with what seems like the promise that there will be more to the story. I would recommend this book to anyone. Especially those who enjoy supernatural romance, such as theTwilight series, The Immortal series by Alyson Noel or the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr.

4.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly enjoyable book. September 5, 2010
I'll be honest. When I first saw this book, I figured it would be another blah YA novel dealing with paranormal romance. Then I read the back and had to admit that okay, it had kind of an intriguing plot, so I'd give it a chance.

I'm glad I did.

The early parts of the book wasn't particularly grabbing, and annoyed me more than anything else. The pacing seemed badly done, giving the backstory as a first-person exposition. But it was done in such a way that I couldn't really get a feel for the character. It came across as, "Things such but I'll stay strong, and I have to go to this boarding school to please my family even though I don't want to, and I'll miss my grandmother, and HOLY CRAP THERE'S ACTION ALL OF A SUDDDEN!"

I realize that the backstory was put in there to avoid the reader having to sit through an entire chapter of it, but it felt so rushed and removed that I actually think I would have been less bored if the first chapter had consisted of nothing but Evie's discussion with her father about her grandmother's health and going away to Wyldcliffe.

But once I got past that messy introduction, Immortal quickly turned into one of those books that has me looking up every once in a while and wondering just where the time went. The plot that unfolds is interesting, the premise decently original, and the hints that are dropped are enough to make the reader suspect and theorize but not quite know how it all fits together fully until much later. Not quite a Rowling-style adept at making literary puzzles, Shields certainly still manages to do a good job with her plot and its mystery.

I was quite happy to see that the love story in this wasn't as contrived as some I've read this past year.
