Book Description

“I don’t know how old I am.My earliest memory is something along the lines of fire good, ice bad, so I think I predate written history, but I don’t know by how much. I like to brag that I’ve been there from the beginning, and while this may very well be true, I generally just say it to pick up girls.” --Adam the Immortal

Surviving sixty thousand years takes cunning and more than a little luck. But in the twenty-first century, Adam confronts new dangers—someone has found out what he is, a demon is after him, and he has run out of places to hide.Worst of all, he has had entirely too much to drink.

Immortal is a first person confessional penned by a man who is immortal, but not invincible. In an artful blending of sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and humor, IMMORTAL introduces us to a world with vampires, demons and other “magical” creatures, yet a world without actual magic.

At the center of the book is Adam.

“I have been in quite a few tight situations in my long life. One of the first things I learned was if there is going to be a mob panic, don’t be standing between the mob and wherever it is they all want to go. The second thing I learned was, don’t try to run through fire.” --Adam the Immortal

Adam is a sixty thousand year old man. (Approximately.) He doesn’t age or get sick, but is otherwise entirely capable of being killed. His survival has hinged on an innate ability to adapt, his wits, and a fairly large dollop of luck.He makes for an excellent guide through history . . . when he’s sober.

Immortal is a contemporary fantasy for non-fantasy readers and fantasy enthusiasts alike.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In creating the ageless Adam, Gene Doucette has conjured up a character as witty as he is old, and as charming as he is depraved. IMMORTAL is by turns thrilling, moving, and deeply, darkly funny. --Eric Garcia, author of Repo Men, Matchstick Men and the Anonymous Rex series

A sui generis Urban Fantasy/Historical/Crime crossover novel, in which pixies, demons, dragons, and vampires are real though few humans know that... Narrated by a wisecracking immortal that s worldly, noir, skeptical without bleak cynicism, and open to surprises; he s half Gilgamesh and half Raymond Chandler. I couldn't put it down! --Jonathan Vos Post, professor of physics and astronomy; co-author with Ray Bradbury & Richard Feynman; semi-finalist for 1996 Nebula Award

Part science fiction fantasy, part action adventure and thriller, Gene Doucette creates the perfect balance of humor and edge-of-your-seat anticipation in this genre-defying story of an immortal man named Adam, who finds himself battling demons and bounty hunters in his eternal search for Eve, the red haired mystery woman who haunts his dreams. Witty and wonderful, with a bite of sarcasm, Immortal is a five star read for any fiction lover. --Lori Hettler, book blogger, The Next Best Book Blog

Format:Perfect Paperback
By the end of the first chapter I was fairly convinced that Gene Doucette had found this manuscript between seats on the subway because it had clearly been written as a collaboration by some of my favorite authors while they were sharing a bottle of whiskey. He has the wit of Douglas Adams, the sarcasm of Jim Butcher, the droll plotting of Spider Robinson, and the sly twists of Neil Gaiman, just to mention a few. But don't think that this means he seems imitative because he doesn't. "Immortal" was clever, fascinating, and endlessly entertaining.

I'm tempted to quote all the clever parts (which I highlighted because they were that good) but will let you discover them for yourself. As an example, one of my favorite bits from the first chapter: "I was suicidal for two solid centuries once. That was during the early part of what they now call the Dark Ages, in medieval Europe. Suicidal tendencies were de rigueur at the time, and I'm nothing if not trendy."

If there is a God, which is something that main character Adam sincerely doubts, then Mr. Doucette will write a series and get a TV show.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book but missing pages on kindle. August 3, 2012
By mike
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am enjoying the book greatly, but have so far twice been reading a part, then it skips to a totally different scene.
I am assuming this means pages are missing, and that hopefully this will get fixed asap.

Location 607 the page cuts out and just goes to the next chapter, location 1723 we are at one place talking to one person, and then the next sentence we are at a totally different place without any knowledge on how we got there. Have tried redownloading and using different readers, but no go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immortality Never Looked This Good November 20, 2010
Format:Perfect Paperback
Reading Immortal was like a trip to the amusement park with unlimited access to my favorite rides. The main character, Adam, is charismatic and fun. As he relates new experiences to those in his past, readers are treated to stories within the main story.

I am a voracious reader and when I find a book that never once leaves me bored or irritated with predictability, I am deliriously happy. Immortal is that book. Fantasy elements, historical flashbacks, and a compelling storyline all make this one of my favorite books.

I highly recommend buying Immortal for the readers on your holiday shopping list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love to hate Adam January 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't know why, but when I first started reading this I thought it'd be a real train wreck. I mean, I HATED Adam when we first met him. But as I progressed through the book, I found that I became quite enamored of Adam - even if he is a raging jerk - and then I wanted to know more about him. By the time I got to the sixth chapter I was hooked. I didn't put it down until I was finished. And then I picked it up and read it again.

Gene weaves bits of history with an interesting world of characters with Adam the Immortal as the crowning star of the story. He leaves you wanting to know more by the end of the book, and yet you don't feel cheated. You feel like you now know a man who has literally seen it all, lived to tell the tale, but isn't so all-powerful that you don't have any connection to him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced Fun with Vampires and Other Monsters December 13, 2010
By MaryD
Format:Perfect Paperback
"Immortal" is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy adventure with a sense of humor. I was drawn into the story immediately by the author's sense of historical irony, the moral yet flawed main character, and the fact that anything - literally - could happen next. That's not to say that "Immortal" is chaotic. The story is very well structured, written with a distinct voice by the author, Gene Doucette. It's an easy read about a man who lives forever, yet whose existence is continually threatened by the many different types of creatures he encounters.

"Immortal" is relatively light fare in the world of mixed-genre imagination - which works for me - after reading any number of thousand-paged tomes. That is, the author does not belabor unnecessary details. Yes, I like "Dune" too, but sometimes one just doesn't want to slog through pages and pages of heavy description to envision a believable "other" world. The fun of "Immortal" is that Doucette makes it sound as if Adam, the Immortal, could be a friend of any one of us who might decide to go along for the ride.

Doucette is a first-time novel writer, but makes quick work of creating a good story and teasing us with snippets of other possible tales to come. I did appreciate that Doucette's vampires did not spend all their time chasing each other through the forest in the throes of young love. I highly recommend getting Immortal now to read and enjoy through the cold winter nights.

I anxiously await more from this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific book that defies genre categories November 3, 2010
Format:Perfect Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I read Immortal straight through, thoroughly engrossed throughout. It has elements of fantasy, adventure, history, sci-fi, mystery... but who cares? It's a terrific book. Adam is not a reliable narrator, but he's highly entertaining, occasionally insightful, and often very funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars wildly entertaining November 2, 2010

Format:Perfect Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is quite the book. Current, past, unknown. It is an easy read. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I had to go back many pages to see what I'd left behind each day. Once caught up, phone calls etc were left behind. Perhaps the best unknown writer out there.

Adam, if you're out there, you and Clara stop by please.

Yep, luckily he has an unnatural survival instinct. He gets out of impossible situations constantly. I liked him in spite of his obvious faults.
