Book Description

Becoming a vampire is easy. Living with the condition...that's the hard part.

Newbie vampire Alyssa never asked for this life, but now it's all she has. Rescued from death by Lysander, the aloof and sexy leader of the Peregrinus vampire clan, she's barely cut her teeth before she becomes a target.

Kallisto, an ancient and vindictive vampire queen – and Lysander's old mate - wants nothing less than final death for her former lover and his new toy. She's not above letting the Acta Sanctorum, and its greatest vampire hunter, Santino, know exactly where the clan can be found.

With no time to mourn her old life, Alyssa's survival depends on her new family. She will have to stand alongside Lysander and fight against two enemies who will stop at nothing to destroy them.

3.0 out of 5 stars They Kill When They Feed! July 3, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Immortalis Carpe Noctern by Katie Salidas

After being attacked on the UNLV and nearly raped and killed by her attackers, Alyssa is aided by Lysander (a vampire of course!) and subsequently turned into one herself. This story deals with Alyssa and her learning what her new life is like as fledgling vampire, and dealing with her somewhat reluctant sire.

This is not our typical vampire tale. At least not like the more modern fare we see flooding the genre lately. They DO drink blood (a lot of it) and instead of the whitewashed tales we are being fed lately, they DO kill when they feed.

If you like Sherrilyn Kenyon's take on the mythology of Vampires or the extremely heavy angst that authors such as Christine Feehan gives us; you will most likely enjoy Immortalis Carpe Noctern. Ms. Salidas takes great care to teach us her take on vampire mythology and set up a rather bleak world for Lysander and Alyssa. If you like lighter, happier, sexier fare, when the vamps are the dark, sexy, brooding `good' guy, this most likely will not be for you.

I believe that this writer will mature and grow into her writing quite soon and needs to be an author to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vampire training November 29, 2010
By Robert
Immortalis Carpe Noctem is the first in a series of books about a newly turned vampire (vampiress?) named Alyssa. After a brutal attack, she is saved by an ancient vampire called Lysander. He turns her into an immortal blood sucker and thus she begins to learn the trials and tribulations of being a vampire. The story is well written and kept me interested as it went along. The story is written in first person and the author notes the character's thoughts throughout the entire story. For me, this really helped flesh out her character a bit. A "moral vampire" Alyssa realizes she needs blood to survive, but only wants to take the blood of criminals. A choice I can see becoming more and more difficult to maintain in her new life.

The character of the ancient vampire, Lysander, is mysterious and brooding. A man who wishes to keep the secrets of his centuries old life as he begins to teach Alyssa how to live as a creature of the night. Little by little he teaches Alyssa slowly, too slowly in her opinion, about the things she must now learn. A very good story written for those who like the night stalkers. Reading the book you can see the time the author took to craft her characters. A very good story beyond horror. More like a coming of age story for a vampire. Definitely recommended for those who enjoy this type of genre.

A must read for those who are into the vampire books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vampires with some bite March 15, 2011
Immortalis Carpe Noctem by Katie Salidas was an enjoyable read. It takes place in Las Vegas, so I recognized places she was talking about. It made the book a little more intimate for me. Since she's also a native, it meant she wasn't fudging it. Nothing like someone using your locale, and botching things. Her vampires were required to kill, but they weren't ravening monsters. They had powers and weaknesses, and were well-balanced. Just enough romance to be a love-story, just enough action to keep the plot going. And an open enough ending for sequels. I could have done with Alyssa being more active during the climax, but a fledgling really can't do much, so it wasn't a huge deal breaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Impressive Start January 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
For as long as I've read books for entertainment, I've found something appealing about tales of vampires, werewolves, and other such creatures. To this day, I love to find a truly great example of it.

Immortalis Carpe Noctem is exactly that.

It did exactly what it was meant to. It entertained me.

Throughout the story, I found that it held my attention and did not move too fast or too slow. It was the type of story I love to read. I enjoyed the author's writing style and the way vampires were done greatly. It can be difficult to make them feel fresh and handle the difficult issues that accompany vampirism, but I thought they were done very well.

It's not the best story I've ever read, but if you want an entertaining story about vampires, I would definitely recommend this book.

I already look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I am not a negative person... far from it. I go out of my way to compliment people, service etc. I like a wide variety of fiction from the literary to the trashy romance to urban fantasy. I was interested in the reviews of this book that said it was an "adult vampire book." I guess I inferred "sophisticated, complex."

This book reads like fanfiction. Really. Not kidding. And I read a lot of that, so I know. In addition to being completely bereft of emotional intensity or sophistication, the word-choice and phrasing is not only flat, but very strange - almost like English is not the first language. I am sure it is - I am not inferring otherwise - but the "voice" of the story is *that* "off" for me.

I guess there are few interesting comments on how it must be to be a vampire, but frankly the writing, undeveloped characters, and one-dimensional emotion is far too distracting.

I love a good smutty scene, but seriously... I couldn't get through the one in this book without an eye roll festival of "no... is this serious?" And that is the last thing than an author wants to do - distract from what's going on with ridiculously trite cliches.

I don't want to be hard on the author (and I am seriously glad she got her book published) but my irritation is more for the *reviewers* who completely mis-represented this book. I mean, I feel like I read a completely different book than they did - or I'm from another planet. Hmmm.... *considers that*

If you are looking for an easy, simple to read vampire romancy-kinda book (with zero intensity)for a mindless diversion while you are waiting for the bus, then this is it.

BUT if you are looking for an adult, engaging, emotional, and original paranormal romp (and have a low tolerance for vapid narrative) then DON'T BUY IT.
