5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome :), February 8, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
This box set includes the four books that compound Tamora Pierce's "The Immortals" series: "Wild Magic", "Wolf-Speaker", Emperor Mage" and "The Realms of the Gods". If you like fantasy books and haven't been lucky enough to read other books written by Pierce you will discover a great new author. But if you are already a fan of the author, I can assure you something: these books won't change your opinion of her skills.

In a way, it is more of the same, with a different plot, but lots of adventure, magic, humour and action. "The Immortals" is also set in Pierce's Tortall, and if you have read her "Song of the Lioness" series you will have the possibility of meeting old friends again, for example Alanna, George, King Jonathan and Queen Thayet, Raoul and Duke Gareth.

Notwithstanding that, there are also new characters, the most important one being Daine, an orphan girl who is 13 years old and can communicate with animals, because she has "Wild magic". As we read the books, we go along with her in her long and difficult journey to master her skills, and make peace with what and who she is. Her teacher will be a powerful mage, Numair, and her friends a large number and sometimes a little strange, because due to her powers she isn't confined to make friends among the "two-leggers".

One of the advantages of buying the box set is that by doing so you can have all the books at hand, thus being able to start another book as soon as you finish the previous one without having to run to buy it. And believe me, you will enjoy them so much that is highly likely that you would do exactly that, if you were to buy them one by one. Moreover, buying them in the box set is cheaper :)

I started reading Tamora Pierce when I was 12, but I still read many of her books from time to time, even though I am quite a bit older now. The reason?. Pierce's books are great for teens, but some adults also enjoy them. I guess it is more or less what happens with Harry Potter's books, loved by children, teens and adults that have young hearts.

All in all, I highly recommend these books, as enjoyable reading material that will make you smile. Enjoy them !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, July 1, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
I first picked Wild Magic up in Borders as a 'filler' while I waited for the next Harry Potter. (I bought it because of the horses on the cover) It sat on my shelf for two months before I decided to read it. Much to my surprise, I found that I liked these books BETTER than Harry Potter! ( And that is saying something comsidering how obsessed I was with those!)

I was immediately hooked when I began the first Chapter and I couldn't put it down. By the time I nearly finished with the last book in the quartet, I was thoroughly depressed at the prospect of finishing Daine's story. I was so obsessed with the need to savor this book, that I wrapped it in several layers of rubber bands and hid it under my mattress. When I actually did finish it, I was depressed for a while knowing that there are no more books written from Daine's perspective. That is, I was depressed until I found Fanfiction.net. I have read every single piece of fanfiction about these books on the site, and I have even written a few of my own!

This book is so real that after a while, you can almost start to believe in Magic. Tamora Pierce creates such vivid, involving characters, that I literally fell in love with everyone; from the dashing Mage Numair, to the feisty pony Cloud.

I would recommend this book to anyone (not just kids) who likes good fantasy/adventure/romance books!!

I read these books first, but I recommend reading The Song of the Lioness first. (Which was also an awesome book!)

HAPPY READING!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, January 26, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
After reading many fantasy books, and enjoying their simplicity and fun, I thought I might have seen everything there was to see about fantasy books, though I would keep reading them. Soon after this unbelievably wrong thought crossed my mind, I picked up the first Alanna book, and saw how amazing certain types of fiction could be. When I finished the entire Lioness Quartet, I rushed to the library to pick up the Immortals Series. I was not let down, and certainly no disappointment showed through my awe of Ms. Pierce's writing, as not formulaic as humanly possible. Throughout the series, you are given interesting cliff hangers and shocking surprises. Daine turns into a very real girl, going through her rather difficult trials. Numair adds humour and grounding to the story, and is also a wonderful character. You wont be disappointed by the appearances of characters from the Song of the Lioness series. As Daine comes to grips with her magic and past, her world is thrown into chaos with political and romantic intrigues around her, and the world as humans know it is disappearing, one immortal sighting at a time. As you will soon find, Immortals are creatures from the Divine Realms who were imprisoned by mages many years ago. They start appearing throughout the lands, evil ones such as Spidrens- spiders with human heads, hurroks- evil winged horses, and ambivalent ones, griffins, and others. These, mixed with political intrigue, and Daine's uncanny ability- soon discovered to be magic- to talk to animals are woven in the beautifully enticing books. You wont be disappointed if you buy them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for both children and adults, February 9, 2004

Andrew McNamara (Dayton, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
I have read every work published by Ms. Pierce. And of all the many series she has published, The Immortals is by far the best.

The story is about a girl named Diane whose family has recently been murdered by bandits. Desperate to get away from her town, Diane sets out, with her Mare, to find a new place to live. At a local fair Diane runs across the horse mistress for the king of Tortall. Diane suddenly finds herself immersed in a world beyond her imagination. She meets wizards and kings; life-sized spiders and beautiful golden griffins.

Diane is told that she has a very rare form of magic called Wild Magic; which enables her to communicate with animals, both mortal and immortal. Her adventures take her from the kingdom of Tortall to mysterious islands; from the desert to lush menageries.

Adults will enjoy the series because it is a very easy read. Children will love the fact that they can be immersed into the world of fantasy.

It is nice to see this whole series boxed up in one location. I may have to go out and buy it as a whole.

5.0 out of 5 stars you get so hooked on these books!!!!, July 9, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
The reason I read the immortals series was because one afternoon I felt like reading and I thought I'd read a horse book or something and so I looked in my sister's room for a good book. And it turns out she was lying on the bed so I asked her for a good book and she pointed out the immortals. and I said ok I'd read them and so I did but once I was halfway down the first page I was hooked I couldn't put it down except for sleep food and the necessary things(just kidding I watched a bit of TV in between). And after I finished that series I had to read the lioness also which was also excellent but I like the immortals better. But what I want to share with the public that this book is wildfire it is the next Harry potter that's how good it is!!!!

Every book in this quartet are ones that I have never been disapointed in. Numair is a funny guy, and it's so awesome to have all the characters from the Songs of the Lioness series make appearances. I highly recommend these, and all books by Tamora Pierce, I think she is an excellent author!

5.0 out of 5 stars Daine's Travails / Travels With Wolves, December 10, 2004

This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
I was reading a lot of newer fantasy and I happened to run across this series. _The Immortals_ was actually the first set of books by Tamora Pierce that I read in the whole series, I have to consider the previous quarter which began with _Alanna_ as the beginning of the series.

I don't know if I have all her books to date, but I do plan to reread the ones I have very soon. Her style of storytelling is engaging and in parts fun, and her characters, even for many of the fantastic elements, face some very real-life problems.

I'm a writer myself, so I read for style and content: and I can say she definitely has hefty doses of both in her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!!, January 17, 2005
This review is from: The Immortals Boxed Set (Wild Magic + Wolf-Speaker + Emperor Mage + The Realms of the Gods) (Paperback)
In this set of books, Ms. Pierce continues her Tortall series by introducing a new heroine Daine. Enemy's of Tortall have released immortal creatures from the Realm of the Gods where they where penned-up for the last 400+ years and have directed them to attach Tortall. Help is on the way though, Daine has the ability to speak to animals and has the gift of "wild magic." The series takes us though 4 books during which Daine will have many adventures and Tortall will never be the same. Taking place between the Song of the Lioness series and The Protector of the Small series, Daine's adventures cover everything from falling in love to fighting battles. This is a truly enjoyable series. Yet another hit for Ms. Pierce!
