Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Drake Edwards is a promising insurance salesman when he is offered three times his salary to sell Youth Hold, an anti-aging cream, to the millions of Americans who fear growing older. Drake's perks as an employee include a drug that not only slows the aging process, but makes him more youthful almost immediately. He also meets the company's founder, Mr. Leon, who appears to be in his 30s but in reality is hundreds of years old. Drake's wife, Cynthia, thinks it sounds too good to be true, and is dismayed by the transformation she sees as her gentle, family-oriented husband displays a growing sense of greed, arrogance and an overly vigorous sexual appetite. When she realizes as well that the spouses of all the other salespeople have ended their lives in suicide or tragic accidents, she begins to suspect foul play. During a climactic trip to meet Mr. Leon, she is given her own chance of a lifetime by one of the boss's aides with a personal vendetta. Despite a disappointing ending, Neiderman ( The Devil's Advocate ) ably plays on society's fear of aging and emphasis on the pursuit of riches.

3.0 out of 5 stars What Would You Trade For Youthfulness?, August 8, 2001
This review is from: Immortals (Paperback)
"The Immortals" by Andrew Neiderman is the story of Leon Enterprises, the manufacturer of unique youth-restoring products. Their products are expensive, are sold to a select clientele, and are sold directly at the customer's home. Mr. Leon, head of Leon Enterprises, enjoys and exercises power. He personally runs his enterprise with an iron hand and demands cult-like obedience from his employees. Faithful employees who make the required sacrifices are rewarded with renewed youthfulness, wealth, and privilege.

"The Immortals" is interesting because of its youth fixation -- a twentieth century replay of vampirism (customers' sustained youthfulness requires sustained financial drain) and Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (employees' sustained youthfulness requires increasing depravation). Also, Leon Enterprises *could* be an allegory for organized crime's reputed sales of drugs like ecstasy and cocaine.

This review is from: Immortals (Paperback)
I am so glad that many of the older Andrew Neiderman books are being reissued as trade paperbacks. Even though I had read most of them, it was so long ago that it is like having brand new books to read and to enjoy and to delight me. I am happily looking forward to many more. And with that said...

Immortals was very intriguing. Just the cover alone was creepy enough! At first, I thought that Cynthia was being kind of whiny and overly-suspicious with her doubts and her complaints about Drake's new job and the people at Leon Enterprises. But as the book progressed, it turned out that Cynthia was right. Boy, was she right! I was impressed with how she really used her brain to help save the day at the end of the book.

This novel is full of twists and turns and unexpected surprises. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone who wants to catch up on Mr. Neiderman's backlist of great books. A wonderful holiday read!
