Book Description

0470081589 978-0470081587 January 14, 2009 6
Immunology: A Short Course, Sixth Edition introduces all the critical topics of modern immunology in clear and succinct yet comprehensive fashion. The authors offer a uniquely balanced coverage of classical and contemporary approaches, basic and clinical aspects. As with the previous editions, the strength of the text is in a complete review of modern immunology without burdening the reader with excessive data or theoretical discussions. Each chapter is divided into short, self-contained units that address key topics illustrated by uniformly drawn, full-color illustrations, many brand new to this edition. The sixth edition of this successful textbook newly covers:
  • Toll-like receptors, their ligands and intracellular activation pathways
  • The key role of activation induced cytidine deaminase (AID) in somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination.
  • The autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene in self-tolerance and autoimmunity
  • T and B cell activation and the immunological synapse, as well as characterization and mechanisms of action of T regulatory cells

Praise for the previous edition:

"This book is clearly a precious resource for undergraduate, graduate and medical students alike… For those who need an introduction to the fascinating world of immunology, this book should most certainly spark the interest."
ANNALS OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING

"… an excellent beginner's guide… the authors have done a terrific job of providing an overview of the field."
YALE JOURNAL OF BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The material is presented in an easy to read fashion, and new advances in the field are discussed.” (Doody's, April 2009)

From the Author

The 5th edition of Immunology: A Short Course preserves the original mission of this book by presenting cutting edge core information about the field of immunology. It does this by judiciously and rigorously underscoring essential content with coverage of immunology principles and concepts basic to medicine. The writing style is clear and user-friendly and it will appeal to the medical student audience as well as students in other health science programs and the undergraduate science student population. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to immunology, June 17, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is a great introduction to immunology. Many other immunology books have too much information to absorb, but this book is as brief as possible without sacrificing clarity. I especially liked the review questions and ample references at the end of each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ordering for second time, March 12, 2006
I love this book! I'm a 4th year medical student and I have 3 other texts on immunology and this is the one that I keep going back to. I loaned it to a friend and it burned in a fire so here I am ordering it again. The text is simple and to the point. The diagrams are suitable and I found them detailed enough. This is my bedtime reading book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introduction to the principles of immunology., July 5, 1996
By A Customer
This book, with good color graphics and easy to understand descriptions of immunological processes, is the best introduction to the field that I have read. It is clearly written and all of the information is presented in language that informs rather than confuses the reader. The authors do a very good job of balancing the conflicting demands of scientific rigor and readability. At the end of the book, I felt that I had a firm grasp of the principles of immunology and the knowledge to approach more advanced and technical works. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in developing a firm understanding of the basic science of immunology.
