Highly readable compendium of essays on impact investing across multiple perspectives,

This review is from: Impact Investing (Innovations Journal) (Kindle Edition)
Just bought the book on Kindle, and have begun reading through a few essays thus far. Highly readable with minimal jargon, this is a good value-for-money companion book on impact investing focusing on the breadth of perspectives as shared by leading practitioners and thought leaders in the space, and with a heavier tilt towards the social aspects of the term.
As the two words comprising the term "impact investing" are 50% social (impact) and 50% financial (investing), this edition has more of the former. I was hoping to see a bit more essays written on the financial (investing) aspects with more contributions from the funders' perspective, especially the institutional types -what they look for in the space in order to deepen impact investments as an emerging asset class, some statistics, financial/social innovations in development, as well as the emerging roles of social capital intermediaries, advisors and platforms/exchanges. That said, the essays "Taking a Realistic Approach to Impact Investing", "How Standards Emerge" were excellent reads in highlighting the challenges and opportunities in sourcing impact investment-ready opportunities, in standardizing the sector's impact assessment and reporting, as well as in getting social businesses to adapt to the requirements of impact investors as they scale - all the while keeping true to their social missions. Perhaps this will change in Socap 2012 when the pendulum will have shifted to the center, and the current bifurcated view of giving versus investing will have "blended" further and potentially unlock more capital into the sector.

Purchased the electronic version of this and can easily recommend it. The "Mission, Margin, Mandate" essay by Trelstad and Katz is particularly good.
