This review is from: Impact of Modern Paints (Paperback)
If you paint, you may have noticed that when you look to books on paintings for inspiration it is difficult to determine from the photography and text just what the artist did to create the piece. London's Tate Gallery conservators Jo Crook and Tom Learner have done just that for you. The work of a number of contemporary painters (Bridget Riley, Morris Louis, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, etc.) has been analyzed scientifically and each artists' process researched through interviews with the artist and/or their assistants to understand how the paintings were constructed. The result is fascinating insight into the building of paintings. Detail photographs taken in raking light imitate the experience of actually standing in front of the painting, looking closely at the texture, color, brushstrokes and materials. A must-have for the contemporary painter, art instructor or art historian. |
