The Classic SongsO Album,
This review is from: Impala (Audio CD)
Thank God they're re-releasing this album. I hope all the fans Jason & Co. have collected over the years since this was released will give this a listen. This is stripped down, lonely, sparse, just un-polished enough to render it compelling, beautiful & (groan) mysterious. Unlike other reviews that may fault this recording for its simplicity & "lo-fi"-ness, I find it is immediate & intimate- exactly the sound that complements these songs & their spirit (a sound, I might add, consistent throughout all other recordings by Eric Stoess incl. Palace Bros. among other Louisville icons. You either love it or hate it.). This has a permanent place in my all-time greatest top 10 records to put on late at night on a summer evening with the screen door open & the bourbon flowing. Get it.

jason molina's lyrics are intelligent and thought-provoking, while his music is stark yet melodic. happy and sad, this album is perfect for both inspiration and commiseration.
