This is a beautifully photographed work showing the beauty of one of the most spectacular rivers in the world. The essays enhance the photos, showing a love and appreciation for the river and its surroundings. This is more than a travel log or just a bunch of pretty pictures. The book tries to convey the experience of a wilderness river, and succeeds.FML

Get a copy of "Impassible Canyon" before you float the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, and you'll have a perfect introduction to what will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Get a copy afterward, and relive the experience again and again though Matt Leidecker's beautiful and evocative images. The text accompanying the images is satisfactory but not great--Leidecker is a better photographer than writer--but the pages of short quotes from other river guides and float trip guests really capture the experience. There are several guidebooks available for the Middle Fork that give a mile-by-mile account of the float and lots of history. But, if you're looking for an overview of the whole experience, this is the book for you.
