Book Description

April 11, 2000
Creationism has made a comeback recently by becoming supposedly more sophisticated. There is, however, nothing new in the arguments of recent intelligent design creationists. There is no substance to their claims and evolutionary biologists do not take them seriously. Nevertheless, creationists have recently made news by stealthily taking over the Kansas State Board of Education and the Oklahoma State Textbook Committee. They have used this power to remove evolution from the science standards in Kansas and to require that textbooks used in Oklahoma include an evolution disclaimer. Similar efforts are being made in many states. Creationists often use the arguments of the apparent leader of the new creationism, University of California at Berkeley law professor Phillip E. Johnson. Johnson has written several books aimed at the general public which are highly critical of Darwinism. Impeaching Mere Creationism provides a concise, non-technical, common sense rebuttal to the claims of Johnson and other intelligent design creationists.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining View on Timeless Observations, March 26, 2001
By

This review is from: Impeaching Mere Creationism (Paperback)
Since early childhood, I have been fascinated by observing animal & human behavior as well as dissecting specimens, and pondering the similarities to myself and my species. Phil has a unique view on the origins & meaning of life we have all contemplated. Like me, he seems to believe his powers of reason and observation over the rote indoctrinations of school teachers and religious leaders. It's nice to know that I am neither alone nor irrational for questioning conventional wisdom. Still, it's lonely being one of the few that knows that the world isn't flat and that the universe doesn't revolve around the earth. If you don't want your literal creationist paradigm shattered, don't read this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars not at all helpful, July 7, 2005

This review is from: Impeaching Mere Creationism (Paperback)
I generally avoid trying to leave reviews of books I don't like, especially in issues like this, because it always ends up a simple matter of faith in whatever camp you happen to belong. But in this case I had to say *something*. I make no bones about the fact that I am Creationist however that has nothing to do with the merits of an arguement for or against a position. I had hoped that this book could be used to at least present some useful sparring material in debate with rabid Darwinists but it falls far short of even explaining its own positions. It's pretty sad when *I* can espouse better arguments "against Creationism" than Frymire. Serious "evolutionists" even laugh Frymire out of the equation when he's brought up. If you're looking for a Darwin Primer, buy Darwin, or go buy The Te of Piglet from Benjamin Hoff. He makes more sense than Frymire. But if your favorite South Park character is Timmy, then Frymire might just be in your reading range.
Even with that I think the most telling proof that this book is a demonstrable failure is that it is available on ebay for *28 cents* Buy-it-Now. Yes, you read that right, 28 cents. You want it from there though go search for it yourself... Amazon would be more than happy to sell it to you right here:

1.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Example of Antiknowledge, February 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Impeaching Mere Creationism (Paperback)
Impeaching Mere Creationism is an attempt to debunk the intelligent design and creation movements. The effectiveness of the book is accurately revealed when Frymire admitted that he had never read a creationist book until he read Johnson's Defeating Darwinism. Then he read two other of Johnson's books, and wrote the book being reviewed here. I have read several hundred books on creationism, both pro and con, and am not yet ready to write a book on creationism (although I have written 20 books so far, and have published several hundred articles, mostly on biology, my field). Frymire is appallingly ignorant of the creationism movement and this fact shows on almost every page. This will be obvious to an informed creationists. And evolutionists wonder why they are ineffective in converting creationists! Many of Frymire's conclusions are naive, and a large number are just plain wrong as will be obvious to any creationists. As they say, a man who has read one book is dangerous. One could add, one who has read 3 paperbacks by one creationists (and ignored the thousands of others by thousands of other creationists) is dangerous. The tragedy is uninformed persons will read and repeat Frymire's errors, and as a result will confuse the whole subject area. To find out what is true will then be even more difficult. This reminds me of the false rumor spread for so long that the Procter and Gamble symbol has something to do with demonism. They finally gave up trying to squash the rumor and dumped the symbol. In short this book will do more harm than good.
