Editorial Reviews

'Imperfect Harmonies' has shaped up to be as powerful and musically eclectic as its predecessor. Once again, Tankian's album takes a multi-themed approach to the lyrics, which he describes as addressing the political, environmental, social, and personal.

'Elect the Dead' is essentially a rock record with progressive melodic elements. 'Imperfect Harmonies' could be classified as rock because it is punchy with many peaks throughout, but the instrumentation is somewhat different. Though there are live drums, bass, and some guitars, the driving aspects are electronic and orchestral. It's quite unique in its sound palette. This is, in essence, music that has sat in the vat and matured to a ripe sensation and is now ready to serve... The majority of the songs have this huge wall of sound presented in a way I've never heard before. It's not common to have a song that is both electronic and orchestral since one is synthetic and the other organic, but I found a way of meshing a lot of these colors together... My intentions have always been to make music that is creative, quality, and moving. I have never learned the static method of repeating myself musically whether in System or now. Each record I have made has been different musically, yet they all carry the same integral spirit.' - SERJ TANKIAN

Serj Tankian may be the frontman of System of a Down but that sound is barely here at all. I've seen so many System fans bashing this album because it wasn't what they wanted it to be or because it wasn't what they expected. Isn't it natural for artists to experiment?

Serj sings and projects very nicely and also does his off the wall style singing he's known for as well. The music itself is comprised of strings, electronics, piano, Eastern instruments etc. It's very well composed and put together. You can really feel Serj's passion in this album.

There are probably 2 songs out of 11 that don't really click for me but this album deserves at least 4 stars. It may not be a straight up rock album but it's still a very good one that should be given a fair chance.

System of a Down fans should listen to this not expecting the SOAD sound, and try to appreciate Serj's vision for this album.

People new to System and Serj alike may or may not get into this; it's very much for people with open minds and for people who like music of all genres.

Serj Tankian is the former lead-singer with rockers System Of A Down and "Imperfect harmonies" is his sophomore disc. Since working with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra on a symphonic version of his debut "Elect the Dead", he has incorporated a slicker more theatrical sound this time around. Lyrically, he continues his biting social commentary.

All 11 tracks work together as a mini Rock symphony of sorts with "Disowned Inc" (which shifts from waltz to jazz to disco) representative of the eclectic sounds.

Everything stands out really, from Disco/rocker "Deserving?", the absolutely spectacular atmospheric ballad "Beatus", the Electro/rock "Electron", the piano/string ballads "Gate 21" and "Yes, it's genocide" (sung in Armenian with the lyrics "I want to die for your terror, I want to die for your fear, I want to die for your life"; a reference to the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian genocide), the Middle Eastern-tinged Rocker "Left of center", and the closing acoustic "Wings of summer".

"Imperfect harmonies" it may be titled, but sweet harmonies it is.

I'm a long time System of a Down fan. It's sad we haven't gotten an album from them in five years, but I really do appreciate the work they've done individually. Imperfect Harmony is my favorite of their solo work to date.

With Elect the Dead, it took me a few listens before it grew on me. I was pretty awestruck by much of Imperfect Harmonies during my first listen. I love the use of orchestra instruments. I felt the use of said instruments on "Elect the Dead Symphony" truly improved upon the music, same as with this album. It feels almost "epic" in parts.

I for one found this album to be beautifully done. It's interesting seeing how both Serj and Daron are evolving musically, it would be fascinating to see them work together again. If this album is any sign of what that would be like, please give us it.

Heres the deal. If you bought this record chances are you know Serj Tankian which means you know System of a Down which means you like his voice which means after system of a down's hiatus you bought his first album Elect the Dead. Elect the Dead was imo a modern masterpiece and from the looks of it, it's going to be a hard record for Serj to follow. He doesn't try to one up Elect the Dead with Imperfect Harmonies. Serj keeps progressing at what he does and whether that means he comes up with the best or worst music of his career because of it is up for argument. Either way he is progressing. After doing the live Elect the Dead symphony Serj has become very experimental with techno, jazz and orchestrated music. Minus out Serart, this is definetly less of a rock record than any studio composition serj tankian has ever been a part of. HOWEVER!!!!!!! Its Serj Tankian and his voice is so powerful that it can and will draw you in regardless of whats going on. Serj imo really is a LEAD VOCALIST. His vocals have always been the most important thing. All of the music really is just backing up what journey Serj is taking you on. Its a grower. Give it a few listens. After 2 or 3 times you will like it and except it for what it is. His best work? Probably not but Serj continues to progress, inspire and he never ceases to amaze me. BTW met him back in 2005 on the Mezmerize tour. Great, sweet person.

I love this album for many reasons.
This album has great music, lyrics and engineering on all of the tracks.
Each song contains many instruments and sounds amazing mixed together.
When I found out Serj Tankian wrote the lyrics, composed the music and produced this album I was not suprised.
Serj is very unique and his lyrics are very meaningful and brilliant.
I rate this album 5 stars. Great work!

It's very strange to think that the man behind this album is also the man behind Elect the Dead, and of course one of the creators of Toxicity, because the sound is so different. I love this album. It's hard to find a seasoned performer who isn't afraid to change his sound and experiment with new ideas, but Tankian does so with flying colors. Each song is melodic and beautiful, without ever losing the eerie sound that Serj gives his music. Definitely recommended.

A word of warning, however. This CD dips into electronica and symphonic rock much more than it does metal. This is NOT the same sound as in Elect the Dead, or any of System's work. I certainly suggest giving it a listen (look up "Left of Center" on YouTube), but don't expect to like it simply because you're a Serj or SOAD fan, because this is something entirely new. Also, listen through a couple of times before you make your judgement, because I was very disappointed at first, but it grew on me quickly.

Peace
