Book Description

January 21, 2010
In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Taft, his gun-toting daughter Alice and a gaggle of congressmen on a mission to Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. There, they would quietly forge a series of agreements that divided up Asia. At the time, Roosevelt was bully-confident about America's future on the continent. But these secret pacts lit the fuse that would, decades later, result in a number of devastating wars: WWII, the Korean War, and the communist revolution in China. One hundred years later, James Bradley retraces that epic voyage and discovers the remarkable truth about America's vast imperial past - and its world-shaking consequences. Full of fascinating characters and brilliantly told, THE IMPERIAL CRUISE will forever reshape the way we understand U.S. history.

Excellent research implicating President Teddy Roosevelt and William H. Taft in secertly making and breaking promises so secret that our foreigh services and US Senate were not involved. This totally unacceptable behavoir sturred up such lasting Anti-American feelings thoughout the Aisan countries that the author implies that the beginning for World War II was founded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well researched & candid, February 19, 2011

This is an exceedingly well-researched and thoughtful book. Mr. Bradley has documented some truly shameful events in American & world history and the flawed character of one of our most popular presidents. It helps to illuminate the cause for mistrust and hatred that many in the international community bear us and our nation. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in TR, WWII, Hawaii & SE Asia, the history of race & racism, politics/diplomacy & the U.S. military.

1.0 out of 5 stars Self Loathing American, March 21, 2010
This review is from: Imperial Cruise (Paperback)
I have just finished Imperial Cruise and I have immediately deposited the book in the trash for pick up in the early morning. I do not normally treat books I have read in this fashion as I am a history teacher and serious student of history, however in this case I had no alternative.

It may sound cliche, but there should be a law against writers like Bradley who take such liberties with historical events to go over the top in trying to prove his agenda. Additionally, the book was tedious to read and is poorly written. I rarely take the time to write this kind of criticism, however in this case I felt compelled. I'm sure we will unfortunately here from Mr. Bradley again since he has been so successful. He will never see any more money from me on future endeavors and I will do my best to warn others of his agenda.
