4.0 out of 5 stars For those who appreciate smart-rock, this is a keeper!
Despite being eventually dropped from their record label, Imperial Drag was a band that possessed the rare ability to combine rough, raw energy, with thoughtful, even humorous lyrics. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not that bad...

I bought this disc used for a buck 99 (+ tax). In truth, I only bought it because this is former Slash's Snakepit frontman, Eric Dover's band. While I was not overly impressed (ok, I wasn't actually "impressed" at all), I did find that after a few spins, a couple of tracks do grow on you ("Boy or a Girl" and the very Zepplin-ish "Overnight Sensation")...

Despite being eventually dropped from their record label, Imperial Drag was a band that possessed the rare ability to combine rough, raw energy, with thoughtful, even humorous lyrics. Their two hit singles, "Spyder" and "Boy or a Girl," are only the tip of the iceberg. However, to gain a greater appreciation for their sound, you would probably be best served to check out the band that preceeded Imperial Drag; the band was Jellyfish, and it was fronted by gifted musician Andy Sturmer, along with Drags Roger Manning and Eric Dover, and current Sheryl Crow bassist Tim Smith. Jellyfish, like Imperial Drag, had a little less than 15 minutes of fame, which only goes to show that to be successful in the music business, "catchy and simple" continually prevails over "substance and music." Too bad. Both bands were innovative and well worth the money it costs to buy one of their CDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A more refined version of "Jellyfish" w/o as much 70's pop., July 12, 1999

If you take the image of "Kiss meets the Phantom of the Park"'s kitsch aesthetics, and mix it with Freddie Mercury's (Queen) vocal prowess, (and vocal cleanliness), throw in a pinch of the Beatles for harmony's sake, shaken, not stirred, you get Imperial Drag. The singles that fell off the album are by far less than the best of the tracks. Spyder has the decent howl in lead vocals, Boy or a Girl of course has the catchy refrain, but throw in sounds like that of Dandilion, and you get an almost 60's folk-music-on-old-vinyl feel. Guaranteed eargasm.

4.0 out of 5 stars The album Jellyfish should have made after Spilt Milk, September 22, 2002
This review is from: Imperial Drag (Audio CD)
Although not as immediately catchy as the first two Jellyfish albums, Imperial Drag's self titled debut demonstrated the direction Jellyfish might have moved. Well, maybe not but regardless, this is a fine first and only album from ID. It would have seemed a natural direction for Jellyfish after the 5 star Split Milk.

The songs are catchy with riffs worthy of any classic 70's rock album. In fact, some of the songs play almost as clever parodies of the genre. Regardless, this is a fine album. A pity that Andy Sturmer wasn't involved and that Jellyfish didn't record this album. It would have just added luster to an already outstanding reputation.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you remember a time..., March 4, 2002

Do you remember a time when bands actually had members who could play their instruments? You do, Weird, me too.

If you're in your mid to late 30's and used to listen to rock music, you might just enjoy every second of this CD. There is no need for me to go further, the reviews I glanced over are pretty much right on the money, enjoy the music. This should be an easy selection to make (add to shopping cart) see there, that was easy. In a few days when you get this CD in the player you'll feel a whole lot better about music in general. Thank me later.

4.0 out of 5 stars More glam, less jelly, February 13, 2006
This review is from: Imperial Drag (Audio CD)
This band unfortunately cannot be mentioned without uttering the word "Jellyfish". It's understandable... but yet very unfair. Jellyfish are arguably one of the most underrated bands ever. Imperial Drag are more straight ahead glam rock with clever lyrics. It rocks... just enjoy it for what is and don't expect a 5 star masterpiece like Spilt Milk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get it while you can..., July 2, 2011

The product review about says it all. A meld of Beatles, or maybe more like Badfingfer, and T-Rex Glam power pop, but it is definitely a statement on it's own. This album's well thought out and musically diverse tracks will keep you from getting bored with it anytime soon. Lots of great ideas. Eric Dover is a veteran of Jellyfish, Slash's Snakepit and was Alice Cooper's guitarist. A real shame this album is not better known. This 1996 cd can be had dirt cheap here in 2011. Get this brand new while you can and leave the uninformed masses behind where they belong.

5.0 out of 5 stars the album jellyfish shouldve released, January 9, 2011
This review is from: Imperial Drag (Audio CD)
after two brilliant pop albums, the last a masterpiece, jellyfish couldve switched to led zepplin-esque root-rock and ruled the world. but alas, they broke up. If they had continued... this album would be the result. it sounds nothing like jellyfish but has elements that JF fans will appreciate. eric dover fits the bill nicely, replacing andy sturmer well, and the roger manning touch is eveident throughout, but it takes a few listens to appreciate it i found. i wouldnt be without it now. BUY IT

5.0 out of 5 stars IMPERIAL DRAG, October 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Imperial Drag (Audio CD)
A friend lent me this disc about two months ago, and I just had to have my own copy. I bought three copies! A throwback to great '70's music, BOWIE (ZIGGY), T. REX, E.L.P./DEEP PURPLE ish (keyboards), and an ALICE COOPER like writer (ERIC DOVER, who played on and co-wrote most of ALICE COOPERS "THE EYES OF ALICE COOPER", another great hard rockin' set of songs). If you like the above mentioned artists, you will like this collection of songs, the only record this band produced commercially. ERIC DOVER put this project on hold to sing on SLASH's "SNAKE PIT" disc, and then did the tour, then went back and completed this product, and a small tour, then moved on to play w/ ALICE.
