Imperial Lives and Letters offers a selection of valuable texts from the German imperial side of the conflict between secular and ecclesiastical jurisdictions in the late eleventh century, including the letters of Pope Gregory VII's great adversary, Emperor Henry IV. The texts presented in Imperial Lives are outstanding. Wipo's 'Life of Conrad II' is fascinating, lively, and full of important, teachable details. 'The Life of Henry IV' is a very interesing, readable text, giving his point of view on his monumental clash with Gregory VII. Henry's letters, finally, serve to reveal German royal policies, Germany's 'take' on the clash with the church, and the language and perspectives of German royal and imperial ideology. -- Thomas F.
