Extremely good stories, July 5, 2005
This review is from: The Imperial Perspective (Star Wars: Empire, Vol. 3) (Paperback)
I've read Dark Empire 1 and 2, Mara Jade: By the Empire's Hand, and the first four Clone Wars trade paperbacks, and this beats all of them. (Though Clone Wars #3 comes close.) Anyways, this volume contains the issues 13 and 14, as well as 16-19, for a total of 6 issues. #15 is in Volume 2. These stories range from great to outstanding, but if you want to read about main characters other than Vader, space battles, or Jedi, than look elsewhere.
Here's a brief overview:
What Sin Loyalty? is about a stormtrooper on the Death Star who tries to unravel a plot to kill his commanding officer. It's a satisfying story that deals with the morality of the Rebellion.
The Savage Heart is about Vader getting back to Coruscant from the blown up Death Star. Some aspects of the plot were a little bizarre, but it's a good story with decent characters.
To the Last Man, originally 3 issues, is an exceptionally good work of military science fiction. It deals with one lieutenant who must lead his troops through a desperate struggle against a superior alien force. It has all the definitive qualities of comradery, sacrifice, and duty. There's also lot's of great combat.
Target: Vader had a decent plot, but the story has fantastic insight into Vader's character. It really works after seeing Episode 3. This is definitely a worthwhile story.
Anyways, this is a great comic, definitely worth getting.

The good, the bad, the great, and the OK, July 28, 2011
This review is from: The Imperial Perspective (Star Wars: Empire, Vol. 3) (Paperback)
The first comic in this series is about a stormtrooper who unravels a plot to assassinate his commander. This is well written and has good artwork and is generally a worthwhile story.
The second comic sucks. After Yavin, Darth Vader goes and makes friends with some Hyenas. Nuf said.
The third comic is actually a trilogy. It follows a character who was briefly mentioned in episode 4 (Tank from "just like what you said with Biggs and Tank"). This mean that there is no unnecessary baggage needed for continuity. In fact, if one were to change the vehicles and uniforms, this could be published as an entirely separate series with no relation to Star Wars. This could be accomplished because it stands out as a great piece of almost "Starship Troopers"-like science fiction, rather than just an interesting take on existing Star Wars tropes. It follows a corps of stormtroopers(a corps is my best guess at least, like in 40k, the Imperial command structure makes no sense) as they march through jungles and plains only to end up surrounded by a superior force with no hope of escape. Gripping the whole way through, this three part story easily makes up for the shortcomings of the two Vader comics (and then some).
The fourth and final comic includes Darth Vader and some hot babes. Apart from that, it more or less fails to provide a compelling story or good action. At least it's better than the Hyenas.
