Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book reveals the fourteen secrets of longevity written by Qian Long, the fourth Manchu emperor, who reigned for sixty years Qian Long's secrets are surprisingly simple. Many resemble the advise of our doctors, alternative health practitioners, parents, and grandparents. They are about restraint and moderation with a special Chinese twist." -- Whole Earth Review, Spring, 1995, p. 84

From the Author

I wrote this book to try and bring some common sense to the Western arena of health and longevity. Every few months someone discovers a new diet or regimen that is supposed to be the panacea for everyone's ills. However, Chinese medicine is the oldest, continuously professionally practiced, literate, secular medicine in the world today. The wisdom of Chinese medicine has been honed and tested by more than 100 generations of highly educated professional practitioners. What is called nourishing life or longevity practices have always been a very important aspect of Chinese medicine, and I wanted to present what I have found to be the core essence of those teachings and practices, without undue mysticism or naive romanticism.

4.0 out of 5 stars A short read to a long life, July 17, 2001
This review is from: Imperial Secrets of Health and Longevity (Paperback)
Bob Flaws is a prolific writer in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this book he imparts the wisdom of a Chinese emperor on longevity, interpreting how it can be adapted to contemporary life. This wisdom includes: appreciating different body needs for different stages of our life from childhood to old age; a regular lifestyle; modifying one's eating habits to include more grains, fruit and vegetables, and less meat; moderation in sex; ensuring sufficient but not too much rest and relaxation; self-massage exercises; good types of exercise; and the benefits of qi gong. The book is interspersed with excerpts from classical TCM literature as well as anecdotes from Bob Flaws personal clinical experience as an acupuncturist and herbalist. Readers new to TCM may find some of the terminology in the book a bit strange, but all readers will undoubtedly want to make some changes to their lifestyle after reading it. A few suggestions on further reading would have brought this up to five stars.

rub your tummy after meals

rub your ears

This is a nice light read but I wish it had more or it had been cheaper. In these ways, I would have been just as happy reading this information in a magazine article (if I read magazines.)
