May 5, 1955
Classic space opera adventure, Book #1 in the "Family D'Alembert" series. The Empire of Earth, spanning more than a thousand solar systems, is threatened by a conspiracy from within. Now, with more than three-quarters of the Galaxy ready to fall into enemy hands, the Empire is forced to call on its top-secret weapon: the renowned Circus of the Galaxy featuring the d'Alembert family, a clan of circus performers with uncanny abilities. But even these super agents may not be in time to save the Empire.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Doc Smith wrote the original novelette, "Imperial Stars," but passed away before he could write any more in this series. I was hired to expand the original story to book length and write nine further books. It's not easy following in the footsteps of a master, but fans have told me I did a good job. -- Stephen Goldin

From the Inside Flap

THE VAULT Before them stood a powerfully-fortified door, behind which lay the document that could bring down the Empire. "It'll take us a week to figure out how it opens," said the Major. "Then burn the damned thing down," replied Jules. The unbelievable fury of heavy-duty beams chewed away at the thick steel plating until the door fell in with a crash. Then, suddenly, a powerful force yanked them all off their feet. "Ultragrav!" gasped Jules. They were trapped. All they could do was lie there, pinned to the floor by an artificial field of 25 gravities, and watch the castle guards approach with blasters drawn...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Imperial Stars (Family D'Alembert, Bk. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Circus secret agents, that is what it boils down to, here. The d'Alemberts are a family of Galactic circus entertainers, from DesPlain. They are highly skilled, as you would imagine, if there services are in demand on more than one planet.

However, there are some nogoodniks around that need dealing with, and other agents have failed to deal with them. Time to send in the clowns.

1.0 out of 5 stars feels like a doc smith, but bad, June 4, 2007
By
It has most of Doc's regular trappings, heroic, square jawed men (& in this case a woman too) facing down evil that wants to destroy civilization. But it's just bad. It doesn't put you in the world. Further, I found myself rooting for the bad guy.

I hope that Stephen Goldin does better work when he isn't expanding someone else's story. As it was, I'm not sure I would have hated it so much had it not been ostensibly a Doc Smith novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book is the first of many in a great series., February 15, 1998

If you plan on reading any of the Family D'Alembert series, then I strongly reccomend that you read this first. It sets the plot and introduces the main characters. Frankly, without reading this book, you will probably get lost in the others!
