The first
Imperialism was something of sleeper hit among strategy buffs. The sequel, from SSI and developer Frog City, promises to be at least as successful as its predecessor. Though roughly similar to
Civilization and other empire-building games,
Imperialism II has a number of intricacies and idiosyncrasies all its own--which is why this Sybex guide is so helpful. The book walks you through every important aspect of the game, including industry, diplomacy, research, and war. Each main topic is addressed in a separate chapter, with the most important topics (such as diplomacy and war) taking up slightly more space than the more basic concepts. Every unit type is described in detail, as are the many research technologies. Separate sections address strategies for success in the beginning, middle, and end portions of a game. A section on multiplayer strategy can help you achieve domination over your living, breathing friends and enemies. Finally, the book includes a short chapter that explains the many differences between this game and the original.
