A common subject in science-fiction is that of vast interstellar empires in conflict; of rival star fleets engaged in blazing battle; of far-flung colonies and interstellar intrigue. Imperium is a new departure in science-fiction gaming and in the fictional treatment of this entire field. In lieu of a fixed story line (as in a novel or short story), a framework of rules and information allows two players to pit themselves against each other, each attempting to better the other using strategic sense and tactical expertise. The basic story is already there, but the action and the ending are wide open; as players control their own empires, the full story is, in effect, written anew every time... In basic terms, Imperium is a science-fiction simulation game, presenting a future history situation involving starships, industry, troops and defenses in a campaign for supremacy among the stars."

You can't find a more classic space opera theme in a wargame: Earth, newly embarked on journeys to the stars, encounters a far-flung alien empire and is forced into a fight for survival.
The mechanics are easily grasped, and the units and random events add a lot of nice chrome to the game. The unit choices are similar enough for each side to keep things simple but with enough variation to give the Terrans and the Imperium some flavor. There are rules for periods of peace to break out, allowing a side badly on the ropes a chance to recover. This war-peace-war-peace arrangement gives a nice historical feel to the game, as a series of short wars are simulated rather than one all-out fight to the last man.
