Classic DOS style graphics,

This review is from: Imperium Galactica (CD-ROM)
This intersting resource management game with old looking graphics that
give the game an interesting look that no longer exists in the world of modern gaming. The graphics are low resolution but functional. I also like the fact that the game is not about blowing things up. Prices are still reasonable so get yourself a copy before they all get taken by collectors. I think the developers eventually went on to produce The Jupiter Incident so its fascinating to see how the graphics went from low resolution spinning planets to the smooth graphics in The Jupiter Incident. You need to have the disks in the CD drive for this game to work and DOSBOX to run on a modern OS.

I remember seeing this game in the store..I think it was Egghead before they became a pure online store...but I could be wrong. Anyway, I remember seeing the game in the store and was intrigued.
Like many others, I played Master of Orion and loved it. So I was eager to play another space empire building game. The box cover art for Imperium Galactica is kind of misleading....you cant actually construct an artificial planet/base structure (like the Death Star). Ugh...that was a disappointment. After installing Imperium Galactica and starting the game, I do recall thinking that I liked the RPG-esque beginning where you start off as the lowly commander of a small group of ships and then sort of work your way up. The game throws scripted events at you such as investigating something in a sector to subduing the enemy on a different planet etc. SPOILERS AHEAD So as you continue to advance up the rank ladder you eventually find out that this very technologically advanced race, the Dargslans (spelling might be off), have been conquering the galaxy ever since you first started the game. Once you reach a certain critical point in the game, the entire galaxy becomes available to you to explore and conquer etc...and depending on how long you took to get to that point...the Dargslans may have conquered the rest of the galaxy and this puts you in a serious bind. The first couple of times I played through and got to that point, I was annihilated by the Dargslans because I took my time playing through the 'missions' that first appear and just enjoying the moment so to speak. So yes, if you want to avoid facing an enemy that has essentially conquered the whole galaxy before you can actually fight them..you will need to play through the beginning part of the game very very very quickly. The Dargslans field heavier ships with better weapons...better shields..better fighters and they have a land based vehicle...if memory serves it was an auto-repair tank that regenerates health while in combat and does a lot of damage. This gives the Dargslans a massive edge when it comes to land battles. You will lose colonies/planets when you fight the Dargslans. In fact, you should be prepared to throw massive fleets at them and to lose all of your ships simply as a way to soften them up. On another note...the game had a quirky way of deploying ships. It's been a long time since I have played it but building ships etc wasnt enough. Once built you actually had to deploy the vessels. Coming from a game like Master of Orion to this made things a little confusing since Master of Orion had a more straight forward way of doing it...ships built automatically appeared on the galaxy map. For the sheer hard factor of fighting the Dargslans and the massive threat they become at the end of the game where you are fighting them off in a literal total war to stave off galactic extinction, I think the game is fun in that regard. But...it is definitely not a Master of Orion or a Master of Orion II. It is though something slightly different and tried very hard to differentiate itself from other space empire building games.

I played this game on Windows 95 when I was younger. It has basically no replay value (always the same, no multi-player) and a few tricks can let you win reasonably fast. Despite this, the game is fairly fun. It has a bit of a sense of humor. The 3D cut-scenes are dated but I feel the 2D of most of the game looks and feels great, better graphics then its all 3D sequel. It's a good choice if you're looking for an old DOS game to while away a week or two, and I got it for about ten bucks total, so it was worth reliving.
IMPORTANT: This is a DOS game, it needs Windows 95/98 or DosBox. Dos Box is a free DOS emulator, it is a bit finicky but you can get it to run in Dos Box. I might've recommended just copying the whole CD onto your hard drive, but the program does have some form of protection, the game will look for it to be in the drive.
