Probably Not Everything You Need,
By Jeff Pike (Mechanicsville, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Implementing SSH: Strategies for Optimizing the Secure Shell (Paperback)
If you are looking to implement SSH without previous experience with it, this book is not going to get it done for you. If you are looking for a book that describes the differences between differnt implementations of SSH and a some nifty management and deployment options then this may be for you. You might condsider this book if you were deciding how to best deploy an SSH product in a large organization.
To quote the author, ".... this book does not cover the ins and outs of SSH as a protocol...... Instead, it covers the ins and outs of implementing and optimizing SSH." Products covered include OpenSSH, OpenSSH(Win32), SSH from SSH Communications, VShell, Secure CRT, Putty, F-Secure, Mindterm, and WinSCP. The author has substantial knowledge of the different SSH products. The author describes some standard and not-so standard ways SSH can be used in an organization to get the job done. This book is pretty easy to read and the information is useful. On the downside, I would have liked to buy just one book for SSH. I use OpenSSH. Unfortunately this book didn't give me enough details to satisfy me. I need to know how something works before I deploy it. For OpenSSH, I recommend the SANS Press book on "OpenSSH" as a how to guide to fill the void. I give this book 3 stars.

Wrong title,
This review is from: Implementing SSH: Strategies for Optimizing the Secure Shell (Paperback)
This book should have been "deploying SSH", not "Implementing SSH" which is really what I was looking for. The information is also somewhat misleading; for instance sftp and ssh are different protocols. What is more, the information on what VShell can and cannot do is very outdated and should be changed. At the time this was published, 2004, there was a version of VShell for *nix. This makes me question all the information on the clients I do not know a lot about.
This was very disappointing and not at all what I wanted. /sad

I found this book very informative, even for those who have a great understanding of SSH. Author has excellent approach to presenting the subject at hand.
Would recommend to anyone interested in learning more about SSH.

Worth getting!,

Finally, a book that actually tells me how to deploy SSH. I read the ORA book about SSH, but I'm ready to present the "how" to my manager and I needed a book. This is the one!
