Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Grade 6-9-This biography focuses on the writer's early life and chronicles her childhood, family influences, single motherhood, jobs, marriages, travels, and personal struggles. The book is based heavily on the poet/author's own writings and interviews; referenced quotes and sidebars paint an inspirational picture of a woman who has succeeded in so many areas. However, her phenomenal rise to fame in the `70s, `80s, and `90s is only touched upon in the final chapter. Numerous black-and-white photographs of Angelou as an adult as well as of people and places that influenced her are scattered throughout. There are many sources on Angelou, including her own autobiographies, so this volume will work best for those who need an overview of how she began her career and why she is important.
