Grade 6 Up. A scholarly, comprehensive biography of the civil rights lawyer and Supreme Court Justice. Although an adequate addition to any collection, Marshall is not without flaws. The writing is stiff and formal, and lacks the interesting details, particularly on Marshall's family life and personality, found in other studies. While the generic foreword touts Lucent's use of footnoted quotations "to show readers exactly how and where biographers derive their information," a check of four sources turned up many incorrect citations. The book includes an annotated bibliography and is illustrated with black-and-white photos. Lisa Aldred's Thurgood Marshall (Chelsea, 1990) is the best of the in-print biographies for this age. It covers all the material found in Hitzeroth and Leon's book through 1989 (Marshall died in 1993) and is far more readable.?Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
