I'm not even going to try to summarize the plot, it was so hard to understand. The writing was so confusing. It's as if the author wasn't wanting to give too much away to the reader, but created a plot that made absolutely no sense. FAMILY SECRETS, reveals the identity of Dr. Alex Morrow, the agent missing in action, and the focus of the mission started in the first prequel in the new Intimate Moment series, The CINDERELLA MISSION by Catherine Mann.

When retired agent Jared Sullivan is asked to return to active duty he is quick to refuse. He has given up the dangerous world of the secret agent, but when the head of ARIES dangles the proverbial apple before him, he cannot refuse, and sets out to find the missing agent.

During the rescue attempt Jared discovers that Dr. Morrow is a woman, and has been working undercover as a man for years. When their escape flounders, the two join forces in order to solve the mystery surrounding stolen gems. As they journey across the country of Rebelia, they discover passion and love.

Jared and Alex s meeting is an unorthodox one, but the attraction to each other is hot and immediate. The closeness of their current situation slowly breaks down the barriers of caution and they become lovers. Both characters are interesting creations. The cynical, tormented hero who holds no store on a future begins to dream of one with the woman who has somehow captured his heart. But their developing relationship is being built on shaky ground. Both Jared and Alex have secrets that threaten to destroy the future that they are forging with each other.

THE IMPOSSIBLE ALLIANCE is another excellent addition to the FAMILY SECRETS. Shimmering with passion, and taut with suspense, this story contains all of the elements that Ive come to expect from the Intimate Moments line!

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, March 13, 2009
This review is from: The Impossible Alliance (Family Secrets) (Silhouette Intimate Moments) (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm not even going to try to summarize the plot, it was so hard to understand. The writing was so confusing. It's as if the author wasn't wanting to give too much away to the reader, but created a plot that made absolutely no sense. It was as if the secrets were concealed even from me when I was reading to the point that I had no clue what anything meant.

The characters were okay, but not great. Alex's character was so complex because of the questions regarding her identity. It was really annoying. Not to mention her secret that she keeps Jared from finding out is sooo silly. I know she may feel self-conscious or whatever, but her attempts to keep him from learning about it were seriously getting on my nerves. Jared's character was a little more likeable and his secret was the one that I could see him trying to keep to himself. That one made more sense. His problems were what drew me to him. I cried for him.

The plot jumped around so much and the conversations were really hard to piece together because they all seemed to be talking about different things. One word: confusing. I still don't think I understood the overall point of the story.

I would not suggest this book to anyone who is looking for a good adventure/romance. While the romance was kind of sexy and hot it was still hard to get past the plot that drove me up the wall.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Things aren't what they seem in this one!", April 27, 2003
This review is from: The Impossible Alliance (Family Secrets) (Silhouette Intimate Moments) (Mass Market Paperback)
Jared Sullivan has officially retired from ARIES but Sam Hatch, the director keeps thinking up one more case that only Jared can do justice to which comes to the reason for this story. Sam flies out to Jared's ranch and convinces him that he is the only man who can get Dr. Alexander Morrow away from General Bruno DeBruzkya, the Rebelian dictator. Jared repeatedly tells Sam no but finally Sam convinces him. There's just something in Sam's demeanor about this case that Jared just can't figure out.

Jared risks life and limb to get Dr. Morrow out and is shot twice for his trouble. As he's helping Dr. Morrow up the rope to the roof where the helicopter is waiting, he accidentally grabs Dr. Morrow in the crotch and is shocked when he doesn't feel the right equipment. He figures that he'll find out what this is all about later. When they finally get to the helicopter, Jared thinks they are home free but as they fly high and low in order to confuse the radar, Dr. Morrow passes out on him and Jared can think of nothing but having the helicopter put them down before they get to where Jared wants to go. When he runs into the forest with Dr. Morrow, he can't understand why he can't get a heartbeat until he opens his shirt and finds a prosthetic chest. When Jared figures out how to get the fake chest off, he realizes what he has subconsciously figured out already. Dr. Alexander Morrow is a woman in disguise. She tells him that she's one of the best-kept secrets that ARIES has. She also tells him that she can't remember what happened to her the night she was kidnapped.

Then Jared has to tell her that they aren't finished with the mission yet. Sam has something else in mind for them to do before they can come home. Alex tells Jared that there's nothing she can do but go along with the mission. The problem is Jared and Alex have quite a few secrets between them. Could these secrets jeopardize the mission or will they put everything aside to get done what has to be done?

Wow, Candace Irvin's books just get better and better. Her books are such a joy to read because I can just lose myself for a couple of hours and am in another country in yet another adventure. Actually, adventure is a mild way of putting it! Jared and Alex are both wonderfully flawed characters who think they have nothing going for them, but find out there's much more going for them than they ever thought! Every one of Candace Irvin's books is on my keeper shelf in a place of honor!
