Connie Gates has resolutely put her ex-husband and kids behind her and ekes out a freelance life skimpy on cash and love and heavy on bills and sex. When a press baron offers her a $20,000 assignment covering a murder story for an obscure magazine, she snaps at the chance. But her cushy job is a sham. Scandal tears loose in a quiet Cape Cod town and soon statutory rape, crooked real estate deals, suicide, and official corruption edge the murder story to the side. By signing a write-for-hire contract, Connie has given her bossa key figure in these sordid happeningsthe right to suppress her reports. Interleaved with the big fix story are sexual interludes of graphic intensity. Higgins is widely enjoyed for his command of the crime idiom (e.g., his now-classic Friends of Eddie Coyle ) . Though the dialogue still sizzles and the action is hot, there is enough huffing and puffing to make the reader realize it's the 15th book and a little over ideal weight for the distance.
