Book Description

September 1, 2005
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston possesses one of the world's finest collections of 19th-century French and American art, with works by Degas, Manet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley, and Sargent. This colorful book, the first published on the collection, illustrates many of its highlights.

Author Erica Hirshler outlines the history of the collection and considers the taste in Boston for atmospheric landscapes which, by the late 1880s, had led young Boston painters like Childe Hassam to Monet's door. Their willingness to embrace Impressionism helped to popularize this style of painting throughout the United States.

All the high points of Boston's 19th-century collections are revealed here, with works by the leading French Impressionist painters and their American counterparts.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Reproductions, December 22, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I could not quite decide whether to give this book 2 or 3 stars. I decided on 2, because of my disappointment with the quality of the reproductions--mediocre reproductions of otherwise beautiful paintings. That is not to say the book is worthless. It has considerable value as an illustrated overview of this subject; but you will need to look elsewhere to see a truer depiction of the beauty of these paintings.

This book's reproductions are not necessarily worse than those found in many other (most other?) art books. I'm just bemoaning that this book, like far too many others, does not display paintings in any way close to true color, depth of color, or brilliance, etc.

There must be valid reasons for such low-quality reproductions (e.g., higher quality might translate into too-high book prices); regardless of the reason, though, it is fair to point out the low quality. Maybe publishers can find a way to do better.
