5.0 out of 5 stars Curtis Would Be Proud! September 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Wow! This is incredible... An album of jazz instrumental versions of Mayfield's best. This may be the perhaps the coolest reinvention of an artist's work ever conceived. I mean one need be bold to tackle Curtis Mayfield's songbook and think you could add to what Curtis already created. Goal achieved! Surpassed!!

It helps of course to have this cast of amazing A-list musicians: Ernie Watts, Wallace Roney, Phil Upchurch (who co-produced), Bob Hurst, Russ Ferrante, Terri Lyne Carrington and the late great Master Henry Gibson. They and producer Brian Brinkerhoff have truly created a deep soulful journey.

Don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow is right! September 19, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I happened on this in the store while looking for something else and was intrigued by the theme and the line-up of players. I am not disappointed. The opposite, I am in love with these arrangements by Phil Upchurch. I think the players all did strong work. Ernie Watts is always so soulful. Upchurch plays some sweet guitar. I was particularly impressed by Russ Ferrante and Master Henry Gibson. Never heard anything close to this from the Yellowjackets keyboardist. I actually stopped listening to them when they went smooth jazzy. Gibson had the benefit of having played with Mayfield for years but his conga is killin' on this CD. Whoever did the mixing also did an excellent job. I am surprised this outing did not get more press.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most favorable impressions September 29, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
This is a great jazz take on the Curtis Mayfield catalog highlights. The interpretations of Mayfield's and The Impressions' hits do double duty:

They are interesting performances that stand on their own musical merit; no knowledge of the originals is required.

And they evoke the essence of the original tune. I wanted to listen to the originals immediately after listening to compare and look for the musical features that were drawn upon in the jazz versions.

Excellent performances and well recorded. Highly recommended.
