"The best place to start. How a plant-based diet beats everything else for weight-loss, stress, heart disease, cancer, strokes, etc. The author, a Cornell nutrition researcher, presents the best study ever done on diet and its conclusions... avoid all animal products (even dairy and eggs). Go vegan like Bill Clinton or conservative casino-boss and entrepreneur Steve Wynn."
"Gundry bridges the gap between the Atkins and Ornish diets. As a cardiologist who invented some textbook procedures, he presents lots of data and practical ideas, plus a strong transition plan. Gundry lets you eat meat initially (but cuts out sugars, carbs, and white foods). Eventually he suggests moving to a raw vegan slate as being the optimal diet (low-calorie but micro-nutrient rich)."
"An Olympic gold-medal winner and doctor/researcher at the Cleveland Clinic (one of the best hospitals in the US) backs up the China Study with his own research and presents his own vegan diet plan. A good book for older people trying to reverse heart disease."
"Ethical (and practical) reasons to not eat animals. The more you know about the industrial meat production system in the US and its abuse of animals, the less you will want to touch meat there. I do think there are more ethical ways to eat meat, but it takes much more time, patience, and money to do it."
"A nice book on stretching. After improving the quality of your diet, you need to exercise. That is, the quantity equation (burn more calories to lose weight, enough to keep off weight gain). Which means stretch first and then improve your cardio through running, walking, biking, etc. next. This book is simple and lovely."
"The best book on running every written, by an orthopedic surgeon and running fanatic. This is aimed more towards advanced runners and goes into the science of running and training. It also examines some of the best, elite runners in the last 100 years and points out their secrets (like walking a lot)."
"The classic book on Yoga. Hittleman's "Yoga Twenty-Eight Day Exercise Plan" is also good. For classes, I recommend Anusara Yoga teachers (though every style has good teachers and its own benefits). See: www.anusara.com"
"Optimizing your sleep allows you to burn fat and be awake, not zombie-dead or coffee itchy-high, during your day. This book from the Harvard Medical School presents many great tips. Naiman's "Healing Night" is a good follow-up."
