4.0 out of 5 stars Taught me how to relate to people
My dad had this book on his bookshelf and I read it when I was 13 years old. This book changed my life. It taught me all about positive vs. negative reinforcement and how it can be applied to human relationships (not just animals). Its lessons have stayed with me and apply even in childrearing.

I bought Don't Shoot the Dog based on a recommendation of a friend who led me to believe that it was a training manual for dogs. In reality it is a treatise on behavioral training that is long on theory and a bit short on appliations. I had bought it as a manual that I intended to mark up, but it's not very useful for that purpose.

I bought Don't Shoot the Dog based on a recommendation of a friend who led me to believe that it was a training manual for dogs. Next time I look to buy a "how to" book I'll check it out in my public library first. Then if it meets my needs I'll buy it.
