Book Description

April 28, 2007 0873897137 978-0873897136 2
What differentiates this book from other healthcare improvement books is that it is the only currently available book that presents a simple recipe of 46 lean steps for healthcare providers to reduce cost and improve quality. By taking these straightforward steps, healthcare providers can adopt the same lean methods which have enabled companies like Toyota to become so successful. The first part of the book explains cost and quality issues facing U.S. healthcare. From that understanding, the second part then teaches healthcare providers a 46-step recipe to reduce costs and improve quality by using Toyota Lean Production methods. With industry experts citing that as much as 40% of the total cost of healthcare production is attributed to wasteful processes, it is logical that reducing waste will lower costs. This is the basis of this book. Although other books have presented Toyota's lean methods, this book goes further by showing how to directly apply those successful methods to healthcare, where they are sorely needed. This book is intended to be a practical manual for healthcare providers to use to improve quality and reduce costs. It can be a multi-year strategic plan for healthcare providers to adopt. This second edition includes additional improvement steps and five new appendices of practical examples authored by renowned lean experts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Improvements - Good! Pontification - Not Good!, May 12, 2010

This review is from: Improving Healthcare Using Toyota Lean Production Methods: 46 Steps for Improvement, Second Edition (Paperback)
Mr. Chalice has written an extremely informative guide for healthcare professionals and Lean practitioners in healthcare. His 46 steps are fairly well organized and he has several excellent appendices and resources quoted. However, his 40-page pontification on what is broken in healthcare (Chapter 1) is much too long. Don't get me wrong... he sends some excellent messages and states many facts that need to be stated. The problem is that he could have been just as effective in about 15-20 pages. He spends far too much time on the topic and also far too much time on his Democratic view of how government can/should fix the problems. Other than the political agenda/slant in chapter 1, the rest of the book is pretty informative and helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chalice nails down the problem and solution, May 16, 2010
This review is from: Improving Healthcare Using Toyota Lean Production Methods: 46 Steps for Improvement, Second Edition (Paperback)
Healthcare is broken and everyone knows it. What Robert Chalice identifies in this improvement book are the specifics of the problem and the steps to corrective measures, including cutting costs (while improving quality) by using lean practices. I found this book both well researched and useful. It is now more important than ever we are able to pull costs (waste) out of the system. Even a well-oiled machine has many parts that need grease. This book should be required reading of any healthcare practitioner and those involved in the policy debate.
