Exquisite virtuosity,
This review is from: Improvised Meditations & Excursions (MP3 Download)
John Lewis enjoyed a distinguished career as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but I find much of his playing outside the MJQ to be of unusually high quality. Case in point, this fine 1959 album. Lewis's playing on this album demonstrates a cerebral quality similar to that of Bill Evans, yet the album still swings from top to bottom. My discovery of Lewis's non-MJQ outings has been nothing short of a revelation, similar in experience to listening to Evans or Bud Powell. If your only experience with John Lewis is with his playing for the MJQ (which is, certainly, a deservedly acclaimed jazz combo), check out this and other non-MJQ Lewis albums!

It is really not a meditation music, so if you purchase it with this in mind, pass on...
