The SUM is greater than the WHOLE of its PARTS,
By W. T. Hoffman "artist and musician" (Pennsylvania, United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Impulse Story (Audio CD)
What IMPULSE has done here, is combined three of CHARLES MINGUS's albums, into one "BEST OF" release. The problem you get with this CD, stems from which three albums they chose to anthologize--three of Mingus' BEST works. Naturally, its up to the buyer to deside if they want to have a little bit of MINGUS' best work, or just have the whole albums. If you know nothing about Mingus, buy a good BEST OF MINGUS. However, if a quick skimming of Mingus's 1963 work will suffice for you, this product isnt bad at all, considering how important these three albumms are to MINGUS' opus. From "THE BLACK SAINT AND THE SINNER LADY" 1. SOLO DANCER 2. GROUP DANCERS From "MINGUS PLAYS PIANO" 3. MYSELF WHEN I AM REAL 4. BODY AND SOUL 5.ROLAND KIRKS MESSAGE 6. ORANGE WAS THE COLOR OF HER DRESS THEN SILK BLUES From "MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS MINGUS" 7.MOOD INDIGO 8.IIB.S. 9.THEME FOR LESTER YOUNG 10.BETTER GET HIT IN YO SOUL 11.FREEDOM Of these three albums, only "Mingus on Piano" is considered less than a masterpiece level. However, I've always enjoyed that album, since altho Mingus isnt a pianist on the level of a Bill Evans, or Jaki Byard, its interesting to hear the composer playing some of his signiture tunes, as they were first heard out loud. As for BLACK SAINT, its one of Mingus' very best albums, and as such, one of the very best albums in Jazz history. MINGUS x5 is a continuation of the same session that produced BLACK SAINT. The "Theme for Lester Young" has bits of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" in it, and of course "Better Get Hit in Your Soul" is a remake of the classic from MINGUS AH HUM. "Freedom" is best known from live versions, including the Complete Town Hall Concert. Overall, i would not recommend this album, if you are anything more than the most casual of Mingus fans, since BLACK SAINT is such an essencial purchase. But if you dont think you'll buy that album, then consider what's here: an anthology taken from three of Mingus' best albums, from his heyday of 1963.
