Book Description

0471976903 978-0471976905 August 11, 1997 1
This is the first book in English exclusively devoted to the startlingly original work of Imre Makovecz, Hungary's most highly acclaimed architect. A household name in his native country for many years, Makovecz first gained international recognition with his extraordinary pavilion at the Seville Expo of 1992. The architectural press not only hailed his organic and highly idiosyncratic architecture, but also recognised it as containing an authenticity and spirituality lacking in much contemporary design. The author emphasises the universality of Makovecz's work, by illustrating selection of his buildings, each accompanied by further descriptions and explanations. A biography and chronology also combine to give a full account of Makovecz's career. Many of the photographs and original drawings in this monograph offer a unique opportunity to see previously unpublished material.

From the Inside Flap

Architectural Monographs No 47 Imre Makovecz the Wings of the Soul This is the first book in English exclusively devoted to the startlingly original work of Imre Makovecz, Hungary's most highly acclaimed architect. In this monograph, Edwin Heathcote emphasises the universality of Makovecz's work. Unlike many journalists who have presented Makovecz as a mere personification of his nation and his culture, the author has spent many hours interviewing him to understand his most important themes and influences: the way he has sought out ancient archetypes and anthropomorphic forms. A comprehensive introductory essay outlines these as a prelude to an illustrated selection of his buildings, each accompanied by further descriptions and explanations. A biography and chronology also combine to give a full account of Makovecz's career. Many of the photographs and original drawings in this monograph offer a unique opportunity to see previously unpublished material. The highly successful Architectural Monographs series focuses on individuals of international stature who have been influential in practice and in education. Each monograph is designed to reflect the style of the architect featured, providing an invaluable record of the work and an important source book for further study. 5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best mongraphs I've seen, August 10, 1998
This review is from: Imre Makovecz: The Wings of the Soul (Architectural Monographs No 47) (Paperback)
First off, I personally love Makovecz's work, and this volume only serves to confirm that Makovecz is one of the most inspired architects currently practicing. This beautiful book is the only one to bring Makovecz to life for those who have not had the privilege of seeing any of his works with their own eyes. I hope that one day Makovecz will be as famous as he deserves
