5.0 out of 5 stars Will love prevail? February 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a very touching love story with lots of plot twists. The characters are believable and you will feel all their agonies and emotions. A must for historical Regency romance fans.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. A man crippled by war, both physically and emotionally, finds love in the form of a self-described "quiet country mouse." Then the action shifts to London, and all of a sudden the little mouse turns into a little twit. Sorry to be so harsh, but the sudden gullibility of the character was too much to stomach.

I personally do not care at all for books that center the plot around "tragic misunderstandings" that could be easily cleared up by a bit of honest dialogue between characters. What made it worse is that the author could not be content with just one misunderstanding. No, she had to pile them, one on top of another, until I wanted to scream. The misunderstandings, coupled with the equally odious "overheard and misunderstood snippet of a private conversation" plot device, just absolutely killed the story.

Could not finish the book, because I was so annoyed at the utter stupidity of the protagonists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good Historical April 4, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a beautiful story. At the half way point I was wondering where the book could be going as they had already declared their love and was on their way to marriage. Wow, who would have imagined the heart wrenching misconceptions of newlyweds. It was truly a beautiful story. Go ahead and get this fast, while its free. I would read this author again for sure.

2.0 out of 5 stars Starts well, but gets lost along the way April 13, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The first third or so of this book is delightful. The main characters are interesting, and their interactions really work. However the second half falls into a train-wreck of awful misunderstandings and miscommunications and general idiocy on the part of the heroine. (Several times I found myself asking why she couldn't (a)just say "no" or (b) ask somebody to clarify things.)

Several new characters get introduced with apparently the sole purpose of creating unrest between two people who had been mostly reasonable up to that point, if understandably caught up on some personal hangups, and those characters never get developed. Their motivations seem really left-field for me.

I think if the author had simplified the plot, it would have been a much better, more interesting story.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 STARS GREAT BOOK April 5, 2013

Okay I only give five stars to books like Pride & Prejudice, Gone With The Wind, etc. So 4 1/2 stars from me is huge. That said I found some real similarities in characters from Pride & Prejudice in this book, including the heroine's mother. But, the story was totally different, very entertaining and original. I really enjoyed the characters, who were very well developed. I had never read this author before, but would not hesitate to read her again. Couldn't put it down.

This book is well written and I enjoyed it very much. True, it gets frustrating towards the end with the constant misunderstandings that keep pulling the main characters apart, but it is a small price to pay for the beautiful dialogue and touching scenes.

Being a pianist myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the musical moments the two share. The author really captured the feelings that playing and sharing a beautiful piece of music can create. There is a scene where they share the piano bench and play together, he with his hand under hers and it was just magical. It bought tears to my eyes. Well done, Ms. Small. Well done indeed.

I would love to read more of her stories, especially if they shared the musical theme of this one. Highly recommended, especially if you are a lover of music....and romance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start, bad end April 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story started out well, but then Jane became completely stupid and malleable. We all have our weak moments, but one can only stomach so much. Who really listens to a person that you know for a fact doesn't like you and has lied to you before.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little much... April 8, 2013
By Dee
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
One thing I love about historical romance novels is that they are kind of like an episode of Three's Company with your basic misunderstanding that eventually gets resolved. This story however was like that but on crack. There were too many chances to rectify the problems before they got as out of hand as they did, which made for a frustrating read. The story was solid but the execution could have been better. Will definitely give this author another read.

Average romance novel. But it's nothing worth writing home about. It's an okay beach read. Brain candy for the masses.

Once again, a good book ruined by too descriptive sex. I continue to hunt for those romances that can portray a great love without describing intimate details.
